SPOILERS—————————————————————
I shouldn’t have read these spoilers, but I couldn’t resist…
Shame that this will be Judi Dench’s last bondmovie, I really liked her M, great actress aswell. I did however expect her to quit this character, let’s she how voldemort will do haha.
I’ll go and see skyfall on the 31th of october in the netherlands..
Great article!
Just back from seeing it. Was simply amazing, apes Nolan in the right way, in my view one of, if not,the best Bond movie ever made. The only thing that ruined it was the stupid bunch of 12 year old making noises and then telling everyone else to shush when we were laughing at the funny moments.
I thought it was great, but Craig and Bardem’s sex scene was a bit too gratuitous for my liking.
SEX scene???? grow up little boy
The entire mise-en-scene of the closing scene ensured I left the cinema with a huge smile on my face. Everything is back in place – Moneypenny, M and a Bond ready to head off on another mission of (inter)national import. The layout of M’s new office mirrored perfectly the one from the Connery/Moor era… and even the hatstand made a return!
Didn’t notice the hatstand- that’s made me even happier now! The best moments were the scene with the Komodo Dragon and Silva’s deformity
Sean, do you remember who said what between M and Bond in the last scene? Trying to settle a debate.
Loved the movie. Thought the plot, acting, directing and screenplay were all superb. My only complaint is a ‘missing’ scene. I would have loved for there to have been a scene where the obnoxious female minister, who had been putting M through the wringer at Westminster, prattling on about how we don’t need spys anymore, felt after the big shoot out. Seeing her with hair mussed, shoe missing, laddered tights etc. and someone explaining to her about the ‘safe’ world we now live in would have been priceless.
Looks like you really were pissed off at the minister, weren’t you :-)
I actually liked those ‘enquiry’ scenes because they showed M’s vulnerability, something we see more off later in the film. I think in the previous films, she came across as a hard-nosed, aristocratic bitch (brilliantly essayed, no doubt, by Judi Dench). Whereas this one showed her fears and frailties. Fantastic!
I’m glad I didn’t read these spoilers before seeing the film but now I have I have to comment.
From the moment I saw the first Skyfall trailer I was on edge and couldn’t wait for the film to come out. Finally we’re back to a proper bond film!! After Casino Royale I really expected more from Quantum of Solace and to be honest I was quite disappointed so seeing how good Skyfall looked I was in absolute awe and couldn’t get enough. I’ve been a bond fan for many years and it’s great the way they’ve rebooted the franchise. I think Daniel Craig has been an excellent choice.
The way this film panned out I thought was brilliant with the subtle references to yesteryear bond and re-introduction of the characters we’ve all been waiting for. I was really shocked with M’s departure but thought it was handled very well and the way the film was finished I thought was superb – how I’ve missed the office environment with Moneypenny and M’s leather-bound door!
Excellent, excellent film. Personally, i preffered Casino Royale as a Bond film but the links to previous Bond films (leather door..hatstand..etc) were brilliant touches. I very much look forward to the next one.
You guys missed something subtle about the bad guys deformity. These films are not exactly in same timeline as other bonds. When he removes his prosthetic and you see his messes up blackened teeth did he not remind you of an iconic Bond villain. Think Mendes was clever enough to not name him as such but the guy is blatantly Jaws.
I love this film. I may have misheard/misinterpreted but I also thought there also was other subtle scenes, one when Severine says to Bond “…someone always has to die…”. Reminiscent of “…No! I expect you to die Mr. Bond…”
Also the malt whisky shot that Silva places on Severine’s head is 50 years old. Somebody greater than I can tell you whether it’s the same kind Connery showed off to M about many moons ago.
Then there’s the paintings. No, not the Modigliani in Shanghai (Woman with A Fan), the painting in the National Portrait gallery when 007 meets Q, a ship being taken off to be decommissioned, compared to several ships waiting to weigh anchor in Mallory’s new office?
Somebody mention a hatstand/coatstand? *Ahem*…Avengers?
There was a scene just after Severin dies when Bond is facing off the baddies, and the light vs. camera angles allow us to see Bond stood on the shadows of other Bonds. And is it important, in the light of the whole Idris-Elba-in-talks thing that there was emphasis on M and Mallory having a convo about how they could hire who they felt like? Bit obvious for Elbe to play a rogue agent or a baddie, bit early to annouce a new Bond – what about another double 0?
Forget the similarities with Batman – the stag imagery – for me pure Bambi. Bambi learns to stand on his own two feet and deal with his demons cos his mother dies – think I’m lying? Go back to the imagery of the opening sequence. Knives, stags, cemetaries, guns, bodies, water, headstones and ok, big scary dragons. And anyway, I’ve bee told even the best cowboys have Daddy issues.
Bloody clever, proper deep.
Although I did seem to miss just why that bloke in Shanghai was getting assassinated when he was facing the painting
Have I missed something or has Bond already slept with the new Moneypenny? Or is it one of those “left up to the audience’s interrpretation things”?
Hmm, they certainly had a close shave, didn’t they!!?
…And that’s everything you need to know about Skyfall… Everything is back in place… apart from the fate of the beloved DB5
