This news hit yesterday but it’s still worth posting. Producer Jordan Kerner has spoken out about the plans on bringing The Smurfs back to life on screen, thanks to Filmstalker for the heads up…
About the animation…
“It’s a 3-D/CG Smurfs…You just can’t make those guys live – it’d be a little weird, but a 3D Shrek world of them – that’s fantastic.”
3D smurfs?? I think that’s a bad idea, the Smurfs worked so well in 2D animation. I watched a couple of episodes a while back and they still hold up really well. The reason movies like The Incredibles and Shrek are so popular is not just because of the animation but BECAUSE THEY ARE GREAT STORIES. If those stories were in 2D, then they still would have been successful, it’s an animation form that still has a lot to give IMO.
Smurfs to be an epic…
“The “Smurfs” trilogy will be “the animated Lord of the Rings – through the world of these idiots. Because they’re sweet characters but they’re goofs. It’s a comic version, but still very heartfelt, version of Lord of the Rings – though not literally Lord of the Rings, but an epic story like that”.
Why don’t you see how successful the first movie is before you get exicted about making a trilogy guys??? Just a thought.
On the plot….
“We’ll learn “[more] about Gargamel and Smurf Soup and how all that began and what really goes on in that castle. What his backstory really was”.
Is it wrong that I use to always want Gargamel to suceed in his dastardly plans? Paul Winchell who voiced the character sadly died last year (although he retired 7 years ago anyway) so the hunt is on for a new actor to voice the character. John Lithgrow’s name keeps coming up in interviews with no denials and I have to say I think he would be a great choice.
Gotta love the Smurfs!!

Oh please no! I can’t believe you want this film made?!
I agree on the pause and take a breath before the trilogy front, but then I guess they’ve probably just penciled the concepts out in rough format, and are looking to negotiate the contracts for trilogy clauses just in case…we hope…or I do at least. Pray there’s not three!
I’m not aganist the film being made… I’m disapointed it isn’t being made in 2D if anything but I’m willing to give it a chance.
Yeah, I agree. The movie should not be in 3D. Ugh, 2D would have just been fine. Maybe even better and would’ve been more eye welcoming i think. This animated kids film movie bonanza is seriously getting out of hand….after Shrek was a success, there was a pathetic onslaught of animated features mainly with 3D animation. Personally, I am getting sick of this 3D animated movies…i liked Toy Story and Shrek and maybe a few others, but most of the recent ones are just stupid and lack the creativity and stories that made the few ones terrific. I really want them to go back to doing 2D animation…and now its just a personal preference of animation….but i liked 2D more. There is something really nostalgic about 2D animated features…and now they are nonexistent.
Oh, and i totally sidetracked on the topic of smurfs. You’re right…they shouldn’t be already thinking about a trilogy if they havent already seen success with the first already. And frankly, a movie about little blue people just does not excite me in the least bit. 3 is a little too much already, let alone 1. so in summation,…. make it 2D and keep it just one movie for now……
