Spider-Man: Homecoming 2 ALREADY Has The Perfect Villain

Why do we need another?

With the end of the MCU's third Phase now firmly in sight with Avengers 4 a little over a year away, the studio are already looking towards the next Phase of movies, including the already announced Spider-Man: Homecoming sequel that will follow the untitled ensemble sequel into cinemas in 2019.

Thus far, news has been limited to speculation and theories, but today saw the reveal of a story by ThatHashtagShow about the first casting rumours, which - crucially - includes mention of a potential new villain. If the suggestions that it could be Norman Osborn (or a female alternative) that's probably not the worst thing for the franchise (even though we've had two versions already) but it shouldn't be ignored that there's already a villain ready-made to be used in the sequel.

Step forward Michael Mando's Mac Gargan - otherwise known as Scorpion.

He appears briefly during the Staten Island ferry disaster sequence as one of the potential buyers of Vulture's tech (he's there to buy the tail for his Scorpion outfit) and ends up beaten up and thrown overboard by Spider-Man. He then returns by the film's end for the post-credits stinger that sees Vulture thrown in prison alongside Mac, who wants revenge for what happened on the ferry.

He's clearly motivated to find out Spider-Man's identity and as a big presence from the comics, he's more than fitting to step in as the villain for a sequel. And the idea that the set-up in that movie might end up leading to only a first act action sequence (as was the case with Colonel Von Strucker in Age Of Ultron, Crossbones in Civil War and - to a lesser extent - Klaue in Black Panther) is really not going to fly. Scorpion deserves more, and so too does Mando.

Anyone who has seen his previous performances - particularly in Better Call Saul - knows that he's perfect to play the primary villain in a Spider-Man movie. Bumping him aside for yet another Norman Osborn is just ridiculous.

So, Marvel Studios, we fans implore you - give Mac Gargan a chance of the lead villain role. There's no way he - or Mando - will let you down.
