Star Trek Into Darkness: 10 Things That Make No Sense
6. The Moron
Thomas Harewood (Noel Clarke) is the father who is forced into bombing the Section 31 instillation in return for Khan saving his daughters life. It raises questions about morality and the lengths parents will go to for their children. Its well acted and the attack on London is full of emotion but it also left me scratching my head.
Harewoods daughter is in hospital with some sort of illness, we know its serious by the concerned look on the parents faces. Khan turns up out of nowhere and informs Harewood that he can save her. We then see Khan preparing the cure and Harewood administers the concoction. As Khan said, it saves the daughters life and now its up to Harewood to fulfill his part of the deal. He goes to work and blows himself up, killing himself and the people he works with and sending a message to Starfleet.
The issue with this sequence is that Harewood is a Starfleet officer. Once he got the cure and saved his daughters life, why didnt he just report what Khan was planning to do? His daughter was saved; Khan had no more bargaining chips so go inform Starfleet that this guy wants you to commit a terrorist attack. On top of that, your daughter wont grow up without a father and have to live with the stigma that her dad was responsible for a terrorist attack that killed a lot of people.
Instead, like an idiot, Harewood walks into his place of work and kills himself and all his friends, even though he didnt have to. It makes no sense.
