Star Wars Episode IX Gets Release Date, Indiana Jones 5 Is Delayed
There has been a great disturbance in the release schedules.
While the world eagerly anticipates December and the arrival of Star Wars: The Last Jedi, there are already eyes on the final part of the New Trilogy.
Lucasfilm have just announced the release date for Episode IX, which will be directed by Colin Trevorrow and written by The Last Jedi's Rian Johnson. It's expected to bring back all of the main cast from the series so far, and we now know when we can see it: May 24, 2019.
That's a marked difference from the previous instalments in the trilogy, with The Force Awakens being released in December and The Last Jedi now following suit, as did Rogue One. However, the Han Solo movie is currently slated for release on May 25, 2018, so this move puts it in line with that.
There's still a decent chance they'll both be moved back to December - it's a clear marketing win for them, and Han Solo in May means it comes just after Episode VIII - but this does put the franchise back in line with its traditional release date (A New Hope came out on May 25, 1977, and the new films were hit by delays which is why they ended up in December).
Also from Lucasfilm came the announcement that the fifth Indiana Jones film, which doesn't yet have a title either, has been pushed back a year. The movie, which is bringing back Steven Spielberg and Harrison Ford, was originally slated for release on July 19, 2019 - it'll now be here on July 10, 2020.
Spielberg has a packed slate at the minute - he's finishing off Ready Player One, and then has the Pentagon Papers movie and The Kidnapping of Edgardo Mortara - which might explain the delay.
