The age old story of good versus evil, light versus dark has been at the core of the Star Wars franchise. It is the consistent core of the multiple storylines that run through the originals, prequels and continues to streamline the plot of the newer sequel trilogy.
Central to the sequel trilogy started J. J. Abrams is Kylo Ren, who serves not only as a product of the Dark Side, but of the struggle between the opposing sides of the Force. He may be dark, twisted, and miserable, as complemented by his black clothing, long black hair, and black mask, but there's some good in there somewhere too.
Kylo's lightsaber has the usual red colour of evil but is wild and unstable as a metaphor for how he is on the inside, suffering the internal battle of the dark and light having it out.
