Star Wars Spin-Off Films Confirmed By Disney - New Film Every Year?

yoda Walt Disney Pictures CEO Bob Iger has confirmed the rumours that stand-alone Star Wars spin-off films are in consideration. These would be independent to J.J. Abrams' new Star Was trilogy that has already entered preproduction and the first film of which is due for release in 2015... but importantly would be released in-between the new trilogy, meaning we could soon enter a period where a new Star Wars movie is released annually. Larry Kasdan and Simon Kinberg are writing the movies that would be "derived from great Star Wars characters". The spin-off Star Wars film announcement comes just one day after rumours hit suggesting that Walt Disney Pictures were planning a movie based on Yoda. This news doesn't confirm the Yoda movie will be first, or will happen at all, but certainly gives it major credence that it is being seriously considered. Iger told CNBC today;
"There has been speculation about some stand-alone films that are in development. "I can confirm to you today that, in fact, we are working on a few stand-alone films. Larry Kasdan and Simon Kinberg are both working on films derived from great 'Star Wars' characters that are not part of the overall saga. We still plan to make Episodes 7, 8, and 9, roughly over a six-year period of time, starting in 2015. There are going to be a few other films released in that time, too."
You can watch Iger's comments to CNBC for yourself in the video below; Will a minimum of SIX Star Wars films released in the six years between 2015 and 2021 be serious overkill... or will it come as welcome as Marvel's expansion of their cinematic universe which will soon see several movies & television productions released every year? Is Yoda really the right character to make a spin-off movie about? Will the expansion of our beloved original characters water down their strengths from the original trilogy... or is that already beyond repair? Who else wouldn't mind seeing a Boba Fett movie? Should the Star Wars spin-off movies be completely NEW and ORIGINAL from everything that has gone before? Should they hire someone like David Fincher or Christopher Nolan to do whatever the heck it is they want with the saga? Discuss, discuss, discuss!
