Star Wars: The First Sith Explained
Before the Rule of Two, there was only one.
Where there's Light, there is Dark. Where there's good, there's evil. And where there's the Jedi, there's the Sith.
The dichotomy between the two sides of Force-users has been at the very core of Star Wars since its very beginning back in 1977, when Jedi Master Obi-Wan Kenobi faced off against Sith Lord Darth Vader.
Since then we've met numerous members of the Dark Side, from Emperor Palpatine to Darth Maul, and seen more of the Jedi-Sith conflict. So much so, in fact, that it's almost impossible to imagine the Jedi without the Sith, they do remain intrinsically linked. The Force, as Luke explains - and as Thanos would no doubt approve of - needs balance. But where did it all begin?
The Jedi Order can be traced back over 25,000 years, at least according to Legends, but they were around for aeons before their biggest ever rivals would be created. It wasn't until around 6900 BBY that the Sith would rise, and it was born from one of the Jedi's lowest, darkest points.
