Ahch-To is set to be a major part of at least the first third of the movie, given that's where we'll be picking things up with Luke and Rey, but the island will have more inhabitants than just the Jedi.

Revealed by EW, these amphibious aliens are referred to as The Caretakers. They tend to the buildings on Ahch-To, and have a connection to the Force, serving as something akin to nuns.

Johnson said that they're all female, are practical costumes (one of Daisy Ridley's friends is inside one of them), and speak "a blubbery sort of Scottish fish talk" through which they communicate with Luke. However, despite being believers in the Force, they're not too keen on the old Jedi hanging around their temple, with the director saying they merely "tolerate" his presence.

They did indeed come from the sea, and Johnson says the might return occasionally, but as we see them are land-based creatures, adding: "They’re these big matronly creatures, but they have these little skinny little bird feet. They were really fun to work with on set.”
