Star Wars: The Last Jedi - IMAX Artwork Suggests Luke IS Evil
Grey Jedi theory confirmed?
If you've been paying even a little attention to the Star Wars: The Last Jedi marketing campaign, you will have noticed that Luke Skywalker is being set up as an ambiguous figure in the new trilogy. He might still be a Jedi (as Rian Johnson confirmed the title refers to him), but there are several theories that suggest he could have either turned to the Dark Side entirely or is now a Grey Jedi.
The latest trailer seemed to go heavy on that ambiguity once more, showing Luke seemingly victimised by Kylo Ren at the Jedi school disaster and also teaching Rey the ways of the Force (albeit after some resistance when he recognises her power). In short, it's unclear right now whether he's a good guy, a bad guy or neither. Hell, he could be both.
And that's the very idea that the IMAX artwork for the coming release seems to be suggesting. The official IMAX Twitter account unveiled one of the displays that will be appearing in cinemas to promote the movie, which weirdly features Luke Skywalker on both sides of the Light/Dark divide. Is that confirmation that he's genuinely both good and evil?
It's definitely a bold move in the marketing, because even with him on both sides, the proximity of Luke to the other villains (and the fact that he's the biggest figure in that composition) is bound to be picked up on as an indication of something ominous. And it's not like it's as simple as saying he's a Grey Jedi (because he would be positioned on neither side, rather than both).
Perhaps it's no more than a note on the internal conflict he's still struggling with - as Yoda predicted he would?
