Once you've taken into account critical reception, the other main measure of success for a franchise is profit: how much has it actually grossed? Fans speak with their wallets and Trekkies and Star Wars fans alike have pumped billions of dollars into both properties. Trek and Wars capitalize on every available source of revenue from Pez dispensers to lunch boxes. But it's hard to argue with the bank Star Wars has made at the box office. The Trek films have grossed an amazing $1.5 billion (approximately) but the original Star Wars still sits at number 2 on Box Office Mojo's list of all time box office grosses (adjusted for inflation) and to date the Star Wars films alone have grossed a staggering 4,277,000,00 (approximately). Couple that with Disney's recent 4 Billion dollar purchase of Star Wars and we have a clear winner.
