Steve Rogers Is Definitely No Longer Captain America In The Marvel Cinematic Universe
Could he become Nomad?
One of the big mysteries from the ending of Captain America: Civil War has been answered.
Towards the very end of the film, after the fight between Cap and Iron Man, the former drops his shield and walks away without it, begging the question of whether he was done being Captain America.
Now, as revealed by the Russos to The Huffington Post, that definitely was the case, with Joe saying:
"I think him dropping that shield is him letting go of that identity. [It’s] him admitting that certainly the identity of Captain America was in conflict with the very personal choice that he was making.”
So, while Civil War didn't go down the comics route in actually killing off Captain America, it has symbolically done it. While in truth it's the conclusion many had probably already come to after watching the film (and the Russos said similar to the above quote not long after the film was released, though this is a little more definitive) , it's a little bit of a shame that they've had to move to clarify something that was left ambiguous.
Still, it means that we can expect further exploration of the character in future films, with the possibility that Chris Evans' Rogers will take on the mantle of Nomad, who he becomes in the comics after becoming disillusioned with the government.
Since Evans will be in Infinity War, it's unlikely we've seen the last of him as Captain America (even if he starts out as Nomad), but after that the shield may well pass on to someone else, most likely Bucky (or maybe Falcon).
