Straight Outta Compton Red Band Trailer Starts With Tiny NWA Documentary

"Speak a little truth, people lose their minds..."

Before you even see the red band trailer card let alone any footage from the film, this promo for NWA will take you to Compton with Ice Cube and Dr. Dre. It's a very unusual move, but an effective one and a reminder that there really is a story here, and that it's a relevant one. Unfortunately, the trailer itself isn't quite as captivating as the real Cube and Dre. I'm hoping that this footage is an excerpt of something longer, maybe a full-length DVD supplement, because I really do want to see more. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OrlLcb7zYmw Straight Outta Compton has been directed by F. Gary Gray who worked with Cube way, way back on Friday. Since then he's become best known for shiny action films like Set It Off, A Man Apart and the remake of The Italian Job, which... well, let's just say he never made another film anything like as satisfying as Friday. At least not yet. If he can bring that same sensitivity to place and character to Straight Outta Compton, then this film could work very well indeed. It's a big ask, though, and not least because the film is a period piece, and carries the burden of some important, expansive ideas. It might be hard to keep a lightness of touch when dealing with a story on this scale and with stakes this high. Straight Outta Compton will be released in US cinemas on April 14th.
