Terminator Genisys Reviews: 10 Early Reactions You Need To Know

A worthy update to a tired franchise, or just another cynical exercise in Hollywood greed?

The release of Terminator Genisys marks the third attempt by Hollywood to reboot a decades-old franchise, following on from the masterful Mad Max: Fury Road and the less impressive (but hugely lucrative) Jurassic World. Anticipation for Terminator Genisys has been mixed, but with Arnie back on board and the trailers hinting at plenty of nods to iconic moments in the franchise there was always a chance it could turn out to be better than expected. With early reviews now online from a handful of film industry outlets, however, it's clear that the Terminator's latest cinematic outing isn't particularly groundbreaking, and that many of the reservations which arose during the marketing campaign were well-founded. From the handful of reviews cited on Metacritic its rating currently stands at an unimpressive 38%, a figure that could rise as more reviews emerge, but one which hardly inspires confidence. The Hollywood Reporter has described Terminator Genisys as "a good litmus test of how keen the public is to see basically the same old thing in a new (but very similar) bottle," which is an apt summary of the bulk of the reboots and remakes released of late. Whether or not Terminator Genisys will be as critic-proof as movies like the Transformers franchise and go on to become a huge hit remains to be seen. Here are ten things you need to know about Terminator Genisys based on the early reviews.
