Beware of spoilers ahead as we dissect that much-discussed mid-credits scene in this week’s hottest release, The Amazing Spider-Man.
Over at Ain’t It Cool, an interview with Dr. Connors himself, Rhys Ifans, points to a few interesting details about the scene, especially as most all of the Internet was already adamant that the shadowy figure in Connors’ institution cell was the future Green Goblin himself, Norman Osborn.
Swatting down all manner of web speculation in one fell swoop, Ifans confirms that the man in the shadows, played by Michael Massee, was in fact not Osborn, but rather a character familiar to us who is in some capacity involved with Oscorp. Whether he is himself the planned villain for Spidey’s next outing or merely a conduit for something more sinister is anyone’s guess.
In reference to the person, Ifans states that “How he gets in there and how he leaves, we don’t know. Maybe we will find out. But it’s not Norman Osborn”. Before ensuring the interviewer that he does indeed have the authority and grounds to say that, he continues by declaring that “it is someone who is in the employ of Norman Osborn without question” and vaguely stating “Maybe he will be the next bad guy; we’ll see”.
The vagueness and intentionally dark lighting of the scene makes it difficult to imagine who the figure could possibly be. The lightning strike has been speculated by many as a possible clue, and even a method of transportation for the character, but then, lightning strikes and mental institutions tend to go hand in hand anyway.
So, who do you think it might be? Hydro-Man? Electro? Let us know in the talkback below.
The sequel to The Amazing Spider-Man is pencilled in for release on May 2, 2014.

My guess is Mysterio. “How he gets in there and how he leaves, we don’t know. Maybe we will find out.” <– logic
I always wanted to see “Electro” in live-action and I say the shadowy figure is eiher “Electro,” “Mysterio,” or “Chameleon.” I think in the Amazing Spider-Man series finale the villain should be the sinister six (which includes Rhino, Electro, Vulture, Doctor Octopus, Mysterio, and Chameleon.)
My guess would be that the villain in the teaser trailer for “The Amazing Spiderman 2″ is Electro. I believe the villain is Electro because of the flash of lightning. In the original comics, Electro had the ability to travel through any electrical device and sometimes lightning. In the original comics, Electro broke out of prison with other villains. This may be the way he appeared and disappeared out of the jail-cell. The villain may also be Mysterio or the Scorpion.
I thought Pre-seeing the film it would be Chameleon. Due to the 90s story that linked him to Parker’s parents but now I’m bordering on Vulture. To be honest I thought the credits scene was weak and didn’t feel like it would tie in to anything all that exciting.
It could have been the Vulture
I think it could be Mysterio, and he wouldn’t have to have appeared in or left the room–he could just project the image into the room instead. I think Electro is a decent idea, and I’d love to see them make Spot into a decent villain.
I totally left the theater before the credits thinking this isn’t a marvel movie so they wouldn’t have an ending clip right?- but after catching in online- regardless of what villain it is and even though it’s not the same actor- I think it might be a mutated Richard Parker.
As octoroc said “It’s the Villain Sundown. Sundown worked at Oscorp, and his powers include teleportation. Also the actor noted for playing “man in the shadows” also is credited on other sites as being Sundown’s real name David something. It makes perfect sense. Just look up Sundown on Google.”
As mentioned, on the casting call for The Amazing Spider-man this “mysterious man in the shadows” everyone is going on about was named David Lowell- Sundown’s real name. Also, Sundown/Lowell works for Oscorp Industries and Osborn, thereby validating Ifans’ statement that the guy in the cell was “a representative of Oscorp”.
Lowell originally worked at Oscorp in botany and photosynthesis expreiments, which would place him some distance from a connection with Richard Parker (and Richard’s family and son). But Marc Webb himself expressed joy in the freedom of being past origin stories, as he can now do whatever he wants with the characters- including tweaking Lowell into a friendly position with Parker and Connors if he wants. This, of course, would be irrelevand to a plotline.
Anyway, Lowell’s powers allow him to teleport in and out of Connors’ max-security cell. The partnership with Norman Osborn would also create knowledge of a secret about Peter’s dad (“Did you tell the boy the truth about his father?” “No” “Good, we’ll leave him alone for now, then”).
Also- to refute the other statements about villans.
Electro: granted, the guy in the cell came and went magically during flashes of bright lightning. However, Max Dillon would not be as old or shaky as the guy in the cell, and while Webb has a great deal of margin to change characters, that is just too much of a change I think. Also, Max was never heavily afilliated with Norman Osborn and didn’t know Richard Parker at all. Thus, besides the lightning thing, Electro is probably not it.
Morbius: okay, Morbius is harder to combat in reasoning than Electro. As a ‘vampire’, he would have an ability to teleport in and out of the cell, and Morbius’ weak condition before the vampirism would allow for the shakyness and age. And there was the reference to him in the video game. But he won’t be used for two big reasons 1- the vampire thing has been really really really played out, even thiugh this is a new twist, and 2- it would result in a plotline much too similar to the first Amazing Spider-man film.
Mysterio: I want Mysterio to show up somewhere in this reboot of Spider-man. He is an excellent rival for Spidey, and film has rarely seen a fishbowl helmet that amazing. Yet he was never affiliated with Oscorp in any way, and tweaking his character to change that would be a breach of creative liscense on Webb’s part.
Goblin: it is inevitable for the Goblin to make a reappearance, as he is Spider-man’s biggest foe. But not yet- Norman Osborn was dying at the end of the last one.
It should be one of 4 choices.
1. Mysterio and a low budget villain like rhino, scorpion, or Shocker
2. Hobgoblin and green goblin in same movie as well as the crime lord the kingpin
3. venom and carnage in same movie as well as the crime lord the kingpin
4. The chameleon and electro in the same movie
I think Mysterio is the obvious choice for how “the man in the shadows”appears and disappears but he was never a villian linked to peter’s parents or oscorp but you never know. Could be Electro considering the lightening strikes but i guess we’ll have to wait and see
Actually Norman Osbourne hired Mysterio in the comic books to fake “someone’s” death and as far as peter’s parents go, they are dread, supposedly, and they aren’t linked to anyone in the comics, they just made up this Dr. Connor’s “partners” “scientists” sh*t for the movie, Mysterio could also teleport in the comics, or at least the Klum version could. There are also many times in the comic where Mysterio is even depicted in jail. I think he casted an illusion to Dr. Connors from inside his(Mysterio’s) cell.
I’ve been playing the game and they make some references about Micheal Morbius, who we all know uses almost the same experiment on himself as Lizard but with bats and becomes a vampire. It would maybe explain his quick entrance/exit.
i believe that it’s morbius he’s sick, works for oscorp, and tranforms while trying to cure himself, plus he’s a villain with a biological origin… there is no reason for electro to be there though most of you guys want him… venom is a possibility cause of the ultimate spiderman venom story… i’m also betting on chameleon cause everybody seems to believe he could work for loads of good reasons… for secondary villains i’d bet on iguana and/or proto goblin… just don’t say electro is possible
It’s the Villain Sundown. Sundown worked at Oscorp, and his powers include teleportation. Also the actor noted for playing “man in the shadows” also is credited on other sites as being Sundown’s real name David something. It makes perfect sense. Just look up Sundown on Google.
I am confused because i have been following the movie since it was announced and up until opening night on imdb it had the indian guy (connors boss) set as the proto goblin. i was thinking that it could be him in the credits but it didnt sound like him. my best bet would be mysterio. morbius sounds likely too but ive never actually read any comics with him being the villain. i am honestly just frustrated at this point not being able to tell the character.
this might seem like a longshot but mabye hobgoblin? But i do have a feeling that could be vulture but people would diisagree cuz he not bald but didnt doc conners/lizard look a bit differnt than he did in the comics but i guess we will have to 2-3 years to find out
i have a feeling that it could be Morbius. guy was in ALL black, which in my opinion could be him. But doesn’t Morbius make an appearance in Blade at all? also, the guy that punched Peter Parker in the beginning could easily end up being Carnage, maybe… my opinions really..
The guy who punched peter parker is name flash and in the comic flash becomes venom.
I have to go with Mysterio.
Mysterio makes use of illusions and hypnosis, he could just have made that man “appear” to Connors, but really there was no one there.
maybe Hyrdo man, cause he can slip in and out in water form. Sandman could do the same, but the rain outside would have done him in. Electro supposedly could travel by lightning, the storm being his cover. Chameleon probably could have blended in with the evironment, and snuck out invisible next time guards served lunch. but my money is on Mysterio
i think its vulture
I hope its carnage. He is by far the darkest villain in all the comics and there’s a good story behind him. Webb would have to introduce venom though and that’s already bin done, bit not very well. Rebooting venom and creating carnage would be wisemans answer to the joker from the Batman films.
It could be doctor octavius, Maybe before he gets his tenticals. He works or worked for oscorp, plus he could hack his way into the cell.
but that does not explain how doctor octavius would have just disappeared like that in the corner of the room if that’s him
Is it possible its not a villain but peters father, his parents could have survived but are in prison because of Norman Osborn and is being watched and wants to protect peter
Its Hydro-Man 100% Look his face and with someone movie Spider-Man dont defeat Hydro-Man
Okay, I know that a lot of people have come up with very good scenarios about who the ‘Man in the Shadows’ is, but here’s what I think. I think that was either Norman Osborn or The Vulture. Think about it; Osborn was dying and that cross-species genetics thing could have saved him in a form of gas, not the needle (like Connors had). Plus, Gwen’s gotta die sometime, and you can’t just not putting Green Goblin in because he’s already been done. He’s one of the main villains! If it’s the Vulture, then that could lead up to a storyline towards the Green Goblin, as Adrian did once work for Osborn at one point. I don’t think the writer’s going to focus on a villain that doesn’t have much impact to the Peter/Parent story. They only have at least 2 movies left!
I agree with him.
It’s definitely the Rhino
I think that Vulture coul be a possible villian, cause he gets his powers from electromagnetic tailored body-harness,and the guy in the midcredit was old, just like Vulture.
since when morbius has something linked with OSCORP?
The thing with you guys is that you think this is based on “The Amazing” comics Earth 816 but nope.
it has mixed both Earth 816 and ULTIMATE.
In the ultimate comics Peter’s parents die in a plane crash but Peter’s Dad decides not to aboard the plane and stays (he was working on Venom to cure Cancer).
He stays and Eddie Brock (Father) Brock’s Wife and Richard’s Wife die.
He later stays with S.H.I.E.L.D working on Carnage who kills Gwen and becomes Gwen later on.
My guess it was The Vulture OR Mysterio the lighting was for Drama.
Pretty sure it is Morbius, involved with Oscorp, needed a cure to his disease and is frightened by the light, i.e he is bat-like. He is very much associated with Connors and Alistair Smythe. His face appeared to be very white, which is very vampire-like.
My thoughts are that it is Morbius
It’s most likely one of 3. 1.Mysterio 2.Chameleon 3.Doc Ock. The Morbius thing doesn’t fly. He isn’t the most well known of Spider-man rogues gallery. I personally would like either Chameleon or Mysterio, since they haven’t been done.
Bet either tombstone or jigsaw…. why go huge when u can go big. Would be a could start for sinister six.
My vote is hammerhead. Note his fedora and mob-like clothing age and raspy near italic accent. I think the lightning might have been to throw us off. And Connors was losing his mind all film hopped up on the serum. He might have hallucinated the “vanishing”. . . ?
in my opinion, next villain would be red skull, if we are based on the 70′s comic… he was the one who killed parker’s parents.. also massee is quite look-like hogo weaving, the one who plays red skull in captain america
But red skull died on captain america though so i doubt its him
