What you see above is possibly the coolest ad for a movie ever designed for a billboard. This was spotted at Sunset and La Brea in Hollywood, CA. It is not a graphic or trick shot. You are genuinely staring at a 3D bat-symbol-shaped hole from ‘The Dark Knight Rises’ on a billboard complete with crumbling bits of debris jutting out.

I know the movie is less than a month away (woo-hoo!). I can understand how busy the film’s marketing department has all year been building up the hype and whetting the appetite of legions of fans. They’ve provided us with nonstop trailers and TV spots. They’ve given us previews of toys, collectibles and other merchandise. Even as the date draws near, they’ve managed to unleash more viral marketing material. Now, they’ve given us this. Goddamn, just look at that thing!

What does it say about the movie? Not much. And that’s just how the filmmakers like it. Is it a clue to what the film could be about? Maybe. Remember, Nolan’s Bat-verse has always revolved around underlying themes. ‘Batman Begins’ dealt primarily with fear. ‘The Dark Knight’ was all about escalation. Could the final film be about destruction? Pain? Falling debris?

‘The Dark Knight Rises’. If you’re as psyched for this film as I am, you already know who’s in it. You probably know, as well, who’s making it. See you there on July 20, 2012.
