Astonishing promotional photo’s and artwork have been released by Walt Disney Pictures at USA Today, showing off the first official glimpse at three major fantasy characters in Tim Burton’s motion captured 3-D animated adaptation of the much loved Lewis Carroll fable Alice in Wonderland.
What kind of deranged artist makes your best friend and your wife look like this? Tim Burton, that’s who…
JOHNNY DEPP AS THE MAD HATTER!!!
HELENA BONHAM CARTER AS THE RED QUEEN
And then finally….
ANNE HATHAWAY AS THE WHITE QUEEN
What I didn’t realise before I had read the article at USA Today is that Burton’s movie is kind of a sequel to Carroll’s fable, in that a now 17 year old Alice (Mia Wasikowska) makes a run for it after she finds out she is about to be proposed to in front of a large high society group of snobs.
She once again falls down the rabbit hole and arrives back in Wonderland, a place she last visited ten years ago. She doesn’t remember her visit to Wonderland but The White Rabbit remembers her, and the creatures of Wonderland are hoping she will help them in their revolt.
That sounds more interesting than a simple re-imagining, and will hopefully lead to new character interactions that we haven’t seen before in previous adaptations.
The article also has some concept art which I believe I may have seen before, so I will post one and let you decide if you wish to see the rest HERE.

From what Drew McWeeny has heard at Hitfix, some teaser posters are expected to arrive this week to promote the March 2010 picture.
My reaction to all this? Well, it’s exactly what I expected a Tim Burton adaptation of Alice in Wonderland to look like.

Thank god for Tim Burton!
A dark Alice in wonderland? Great, wake me up when it’s over. This just doesn’t look interesting to me at all. It’s also worth noting that Alice is getting a March release, I hope they are not looking for the revenues that Charlie and the Chocolate Factory or Planet of the Apes grossed. Those movies were both worse than the originals I see that trend continuing.
Burton how about trying something original and not Frankenweenie that’s just stupid.
This is going to be a full-on assault on the senses, as long as there’s minimal singing then I’m going to be happy.
Taking bets on how many people suffer epileptic fits during screenings…
depp looks a little elijah wood in this picture. i think its gonna be amazing! cant wait!
Thanks for the pics! This looks good, I love Alice in Wonderland and I am very interested to see what Tim Burton does with it (even if it is a re-imagining which is cool too!)
One again Tim Burton never leaves his small little uncreative box and will never but i am going to see it because i personally think it’ll be a cool watch but i am not in any way condoning Burton.
seems like thats all he can do. make something look “weird”
and to be honest, thats not that hard. its becoming a little mundane even for burton now. “oh how can we make this classic childrens book into a crazy acid trip with my name stamped on it? oh lets just make it the most effed up thing. thats what i did with charlie, and look where that got me!”
i think johnny depp looks rather stupid as the mad hatter, and this whole “beautiful/weird” mind Burton is so praised for (good for original stuff, and his originals-scissorhands, addams fam) but i just think hes becoming overrated. he gets paid to make weird movies, but should we immediately shower him with praise and amazement just because its crazy weird?
Good lord, im all for credible negative comments. But you guys sound as insightful as people bitching about every Tarantino movie NOT being like Pulp Fiction. Lame.
i wonder if this is based off the other book “Alice throught the looking glass and what she saw” if so it would this could be really fun because the last time i saw an adaptation of it was when Channel 4 did it with kate bekinsale.
I love the fact that Tim Burton… ummm “Burtonized” this story, because it really fits his style. I don´t love the fact that he keeps copying stories.
Oh, and I love the cast :)
I think these shots look terrible. Hopefully, it looks better in motion.
Bozo goes steampunk!
It sounds as if there are bits of both books in here. The Red and White Queens are from “Through the Looking Glass”, and it sounds as if the Red Queen has been combined with the Queen of Hearts from “Alice” (a very different character).
It may well be a sort of Greatest Hits thing with just the bits everyone remembers from childhood readings.
This year my school did the Musical Alice In Wonderland and I was the King Of Hearts so it bugs me that Tim Burton got rid of the King And Queen of Hearts I think it is terrible and shouldn’t be A Red Queen I hate TIM BURTON HE SHOULD DIE
Will there be another movie after this one?
Think about how much you’d hate it if someone other than Tim made a sequel to Scissor Hands, or Beetle Juice. Well, that’s how much I hate his sequel to Lewis Carol’s classic Alice. Off with his head!
