The first trailer is here for the long-gestating Top Gun sequel, Top Gun: Maverick – and it’s dripping full of familiar beats and goosebumps-inducing moments!

Tom Cruise is back to headline the follow-up as he reprises the Peter “Maverick” Mitchell role that still stands as one of the veteran actor’s most beloved.

Set 34 years after the events of Tony Scott’s 1986 original movie, Top Gun: Maverick will see Cruise’s character heading up the Topgun school as its new flight instructor. As it happens, one of the trainee pilots under Maverick’s tutelage is Miles Teller’s Bradley Bradshaw – the son of Maverick’s deceased BFF, Nick “Goose” Bradshaw.

From what we can see in this first trailer, there are a whole lot of nods and winks to keep fans of Top Gun happy, whilst we also get plenty of Ed Harris devouring scenery as one of Maverick’s superiors. And those aerial shots? Absolutely glorious.

Filling out the rest of the cast, the Top Gun sequel will also feature names such as A Beautiful Mind’s Jennifer Connelly, Mad Men’s Jon Hamm, The Good Place’s Manny Jacinto, and a much-demanded return for Val Kilmer’s Thomas “Iceman” Kazansky.
