Though the film doesn't explain it particularly well, it's revealed that Earth is, in fact, Cybertron's ancient enemy known as Unicron.

The bulk of antagonist Quintessa's plan then involves corrupting Optimus and tasking him with destroying Unicron so that Cybertron can flourish once again.

As the movie begins, six horns begin emerging in various locations around the globe in response to Cybertron hurtling close to Earth, and though Unicron has been depicted as a planet-like entity in some of the source material, it's weird that he was given such a passive, inert treatment here.

Let the fanboy rage commence.
