Where's Rey? Hasbro Explains Her Absence From Star Wars Monopoly Board

The explanation is roughly 50% acceptable.

Following the recent outcry that Rey isn't featured as a playable token in the new version of Star Wars Monopoly, Hasbro have made a public statement providing a reason for the oversight - which, it turns out, wasn't an oversight to begin with. This comes off the back of fan-grumbling that Finn, Kylo Ren, Darth Vader and Luke Skywalker are all player counters, when Rey is arguably the main character and the latter two barely feature in The Force Awakens. The spokesperson for Hasbro stated;
"The Star Wars: Monopoly game was released in September, months before the movie€™s release, and Rey was not included to avoid revealing a key plot line that she takes on Kylo Ren and joins the Rebel Alliance."
The explanation feels like a bit of a copout. Surely Rey could have been included as a playable character without giving away her ultimate allegiance in the movie (which was fairly obvious, anyway)? It's not for me to judge the veracity of a company's apology, but it does seem fairly weak. The spokesperson went on to say;
€œWe are thrilled with the popularity of this compelling character and will continue to look for ways to showcase Rey across all of our product lines€
They also added that Rey is being featured in other boardgames and appearing in multiple sizes of action figures/dolls. What say you? A worthy response to #WheresRey? Strike back in the comments below. Star Wars: The Force Awakens is out now.
