Zombies are a hugely fashionable monster at the moment, thanks in no small part to the resounding success of The Walking Dead (both the original comics, the TV show and the superb video game from Telltale). However, even before that, author Max Brooks was busy rejuvenating the genre with such stellar works as The Zombie Survival Guide and of course his legendary fictional oral history World War Z.
You’re probably already aware that World War Z was optioned for cinematic production years ago and fans of the book will have no doubt been following its road to release with interest and potentially with growing disquiet.
Well, Z-Day is almost upon us and a couple of days ago we were gifted with the first cinematic trailer. If you haven’t checked it out yet, here it is:
As a huge fan of the book, the above trailer filled me with a vague sense of unshakeable disappointment, for more reasons than one. And based on what I’m hearing around the web, I’m far from the only one. Yes, like many out there, I’ve got an unshakeable feeling that World War Z is probably going to suck.

Also, Brad Pitt isn’t a terribly great actor. Someone with a modicum of talent might be able to lift this up out of the pit, so to speak, but his Tyler Durden days are more flukes than not. Mostly, he’s just blinking his big eyes at the screen and being dull as hell.
And looks who’s judging him. What credibility do you even to make such a statement.
Someone start a kickstarter to raise money and buy back the rights from Pitt. Call Warren Buffett.
I was just a few moments into the trailer when I felt my hopes being dashed. The more I saw, the more disappointed I became. Another Dawn of the Dead except with Brad Pitt and bigger CGI effects. You are correct, the only thing it is going to have in common with the book is the title.
Fast Zombies are fine, 28 days later rocked it. But the fast zombutts in the trailer have nothing to do with Reality, It looks ridicules. Like a hive mind only controlled by Flaterlies the River Dance Master and coordinated as tight as the Killer Robots swarming in the last matrix movie.
People should be ashamed.

The most negative review I have ever read here. I got half way through and thought, this reads like world war Z was your best friend, until you caught him in bed with your wife, now nothing he does will make up for it.
The only thing I was disappointed with in the trailer was the behaviour of the horde. Like Midas68 said, was too much like a hive mind, but with all we know, that may tie in with someone’s recollection of the events in the film.
It’s a little soon to write the film off, I for one can not wait to catch this in the cinema.
It seems like it will be to the book what the “i robot” movie was to its literary counterpart. I hope I’m proved wrong but smells like they bought the rights to the cool sounding title in order to be able to slap it on a movie poster and write a story around it.

I thought it needed to at least be split into multiple films, but wow, a TV series would capture it perfectly. All of the emotion of the novel is seemingly gone.
So many great individual stories form the book, and I just don’t see any of that in the film.
Read about the huge problems in production and you see why we ended up with this.
