The tragedy of Chris Benoit’s final days are to be re-told in a new big screen ‘biographical thriller’, entitled Crossface.
SRG Films have bought the rights to Matthew Randazzo’s book “Ring of Hell: The Story of Chris Benoit and the Fall of the Pro Wrestling Industry”, one of the countless number of books about the pressures the wrestling superstar faced throughout his career and how it was that a quiet family man, who was 100% dedicated to their safety and his ability to be the absolute best in the squared circle, one weekend murdered his wife and young son before hanging himself.
Randazoo’s book which I haven’t read (though I have read others) suggests severe depression caused by head trauma and steroid/drug-use that damaged his brain and had turned him psychotic.
SRG chief Dale Alexander Carnegie is producing, WME are packaging the project. I believe but I’m not certain that this might be SRG Films’ first production.
Former Weinstein staffer Sarah Coulter has already written the first draft of the script which will begin filming late 2012. They are in talks with directors and actors for the project right now and the film already has an IMDB page.
The title ‘Crossface’ was the name of his finishing move in the ring.
“All of us grow up believing that wrestling is fake, but looking at the shocking number of deaths in the industry, it quickly becomes evident that there is nothing fake about the dangers of this sport,” Carnegie said. “Chris Benoit has become a poster child for everything that’s wrong with professional wrestling and Sarah’s terrific script captures his struggles and the many factors that led to the deaths of three people.”
Coulter added: “People immediately point to steroids, never thinking about the brain trauma these wrestlers can, and do, incur in their profession, nor do they consider the rigorous schedule that keeps them working even when they shouldn t be. The Benoit story is one that needs to be brought into the light.:
The tragedy of the Benoit family is the biggest story in the history of wrestling and in the summer of 2007 made headlines globally for weeks on end. For many a wrestling fan at the time, he was the last person and I really do mean the absolute last person you would EVER think would bring harm to himself or his children and he seemed like he was one of the good guys…. but in the end he turned out to be the worst of them all.
No matter how good Benoit was in the ring and how much of an accomplished performer he was (probably the best of his generation) it doesn’t disguise the fact he committed the most heinous of crimes.
From the sounds of the title with the words ‘Ring of Hell’ and “the Fall of the Pro Wrestling Industry” I don’t think WWE owner Vince McMahon will come off too well in this movie and I’m certain this will be a production many in the industry won’t want to see.
Sensationalist ‘biographical thriller’. This sure sounds controversial…

Are we ever going to get a film that shows wrestling in a good light? It’s either horribly produced wwe films about the subject or grim but engrossing pictures like The wrestler. Anyway I think this film needs to be made to confront the big elephant in the room and act as an important warning against substance abuse.
I think you forgot about NO holds bared with Hulk hogan and Zeus. i am sure that was a bio pic as they did feud out side the movie as well. That movie put wrestlers in a good light. this was sarcasm btw
This is a terrible article, most wrestling fans remember Beniot for his many achievements in the ring and how he helped so many of today’s stars grow. This writter has made him out to be extremely important (his family was never really even discussed till this event) and he was far from the biggest name in wrestling during his time. The movie is just a pay day and they probaby have not a clue what the wrestling world is like.. None the less, the movie won’t get a take off as Vince will nix any useage of WWE/WWF/WCW footage, so yeah they don’t have much to work with.
What you on about Megan? Everyone knew Benoit adored his family before that day. Them and wrestling was his life and then he chucked it all away on the day.
You are right, no footage owned by the WWE would be part of the film. But that won’t stop it being made. The movie (which I don’t think should be made) will be about the man out of the ring.
Megan, Matt, both of you should know that we all live in a capitalist world. So, the movie will be made, and there’s nothing you can do about it!
A book about a loser written by a loser can only equal a loser of a film.
I choose to remember him for all the good he did. I don’t know the man who committed this horrific crime. No matter what I will read this book and I will see this film. And Al…Ur opinion is Ur own…but benoit did do more good for the wrestling industry than bad. I don’t condone what this guy did….but I know it wasn’t the chris Benoit I knew growing up.
I love how when mentally retarded people kill someone they can get off or at least get shown some leniency but a guy who was so demented and had the brain of an 80 year old at 42 is still looked at as a monster. No, I’m not saying he’s off of the hook, he did it, but the Benoit Family Tragedy is something where a good amount of questions are still unanswered so you have to look at the situation as a whole not and not just as “He’s just a stone cold killer.”
i think before people jump to conclusions like the idiot who is doing this film we need more info not just a guys book who think he knows everything that went wrong that night so i when this movie comes out will not go and see it or buy it on dvd or blu-ray because i rather remember chris benoit as a great wrestler not a murderer and this movie and book takes down his legacy of that
You’ve got a good point there.
If they want to do this thing right. They need to have live interviews with Jericho, Chavo, and Dean Milenko. These are probably the only guys that knew Beniot better than anyone. I’ve read both of Jericho’s books and he talks very highly on Beniot in both of them. If Beniot was a “monster”, its only because the WWE created him.
I knew and roomed with Chris in Japan in January of 1991, after having covered the biz as a writer/photographer since 1966 for the genre magazines. He wasn’t a monster at all then, and totally dedicated to his craft as everyone knows. No one in our industry had ever heard of this author before(who seemed pompous once the thing actually got published amidst many other Benoit books), and the book was fairly markish and derivative. They’d have to also interview Perry Saturn, the Hart family of course as well.
It wasn’t until his last few yrs with the Whiff/WWE that the drug problems allegedly escalated/heightened. Horrific nightmare he sadly caused, (even worse for his innocent wife Nance who we all knew and their son) who was once the hardest working, best and most dedicated athlete in the faux world of wrestling. Look at his Calgary, Japan and ECW work for that more positive aspect of Chris. We miss all three and pray for them.

i am a member of iatse 411 in canada..if this movie is made I will do everything in my power to make sure its not filmed here, this movie will do more harm then good, He will never be in a spot in the Hall of fame, one that he more then earned!, he will never be refered to again in a positive light on a grand scale, all he accomplished in his career is washed away by his last act..Just let it be this film will bring more harm then good to the Industry and with Hollywod spin will bring unwanted attention to his Father and the surviving members of Nancy’s family..Pls I beg of you don’t do this, let the dead rest just let it go!
As a wrestling fan and someone who has been arou.d the wrestling circuit, there is no way to makw a real movie about wrestling that isnt grim.esp. based on this topic.injury and the medication perscribed can drive a sane person crazy and a sober person to addiction. Tv and the ring is where it looks magical, behind the curtain is usually anything but. I look forward to seeing how benoits seemingly perfect, obviously tragic life is portrayed.
Me too, Linda.
I am a huge Benoit fan and am pleased that some light is being shed on his. All the media coverage at the time was so intense. It is Super tragic what he did. Significant factors like the steroids and whatever other drugs were in play, the head injuries he had, the depression…its the actual real life story of a guy going crazy and doing crazy things…i think if there are movies based on charles manson and other criminals…then whats the big issue with this one being made ? If anything it will draw awareness to brain injuries and the short term and long term effects.
That’s right, because we need to spread the awareness of how wrestling can mentally break people.
I wonder if this event did not happen what would his role be like now ? Fued with punk ? Cena ? Invole bret more ? Would he have been close with dhs, tyson n natalia ? I thought he was the best in the world @ what he did…so sad he went crazy and did what he did. When it happend, i was so sure they would find out that somone eles did it – not chris.
I get told ALLLL the time I resemble Benoit. Even from people that barely know wrestling. “you look like the wrestler guy” I wrestle like him too. I’d be great to play the role of him. How can I make this happen?
No story in the history of wrestling has got more media coverage in my lifetime, for sure.
This is B.S. Let’s just f*cking move on already. Benoit’s actions in his last days do not reflect what the WWE is all about. Not even a little.
I’ve been a fan of wrestling ever since I can remember but you guys need to get a grip. What entertainment industry is more dirty than pro wrestling? Porn? Maybe, but it’d be a close call.
Benoit was a great wrestler so all u bad mouth him shut it. Beacuse he was a great wrestler and he made a huge mistake It cost him his life and family he still. A great wrestler
The guy that killed his wife and small child was a great wrestler. Well bully for that spouse and child murderer.
The only problem I have with this is that I’m willing to bet the majority of this movie will be spent bashing WWE and their “rigorous schedule,” insinuating that they are the cause of this tragedy (as most already have). The Flying Headbutt that Benoit become known for in the ring is a move he did for years prior to joining the WWE, but I’m sure that little factoid will be ignored… Oh well, we’ll see what happens…
I don’t know how I feel about this just yet…
