Glitches are usually a sign that a video game developer just hasn’t put enough time into refining their product and ironing out the flaws, but on occasion, it can in fact be so hilarious or simply so accidentally ingenious that it improves the game, and at the very least, makes the gaming experience a more memorable one. Here are 10 games – most of them already good, mind – that have had us more engrossed because of their memorable glitches, allowing the game to live on longer than it otherwise would have.
10. Battlefield: Bad Company 2 – The Knife Of God
Battlefield: Bad Company 2 is for the most part an extremely polished game that has clearly gone through a lot of bug testing, but that didn’t stop this one sneaking through. When on the game’s Isla Inocentes map, the player is – or rather, was, given that this was patched over two years ago – by hitting the sweet spot, able to reduce a large building to rubble with the mere slash of a blade, made all the more hilarious given that the building is designed to withstand mortar strikes among other things.
Though it’s only a small component of the game, and in many eyes won’t do much to improve it, it provided a great few laughs before the spoilsports patched it, and certainly helped keep the game in our console for a while longer. Also, for a game that’s pretty damn serious, it’s a much-needed comic flourish and nice break in the action.

In Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 2, there is a glitch in the Bull Ring stage (the final stage of the game) that allows the player to infinitely perform a grind on the light wires that crisscross above the center of the halfpipe in the middle of the stage.
The only times I was ever able to accomplish it was by using the halfpipe to gain speed and hang time, and then landing on one of the crosswires. The few times I’ve gotten it to work I managed to rack up millions of points.
The glitch in this feat is that whilst on the crosswires, no balancing is needed at all. How this works, is that the wires have a very subtle angle to them, and form a bowl. When landing on the wire from the air gained from the halfpipe, your skater drastically reduces speed. If going the right speed, aka kinda slow, your skater will start the grind, hit a peak, turn around and begin going the other way, where he will again hit a peak at the other side, turn around, and begin the cycle again. You can literally set the controller down, go make a sandwich, eat it, return, and your skater will still be going strong.
The original Mario Kart (in the PAL version at least) had a weird and pointless glitch I discovered myself. If you watched a replay holding the rear view button and also closely matched the steering inputs, every once in a while you’ll actually take control of the kart. You get stuck in reverse view though, so you don’t really benefit :)
Crouch-jumping in all Valve games should be mentioned IMO :D
What about the glitch in Quake that eventually led to strafe jumping?
There were some really good ones in Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion that definitely made it better! just my opinion though
How about the Swing Glitch in GTA IV? Best physics exploit so far.
How about the attack cancel in one of the first street fighter games? (I don’t know which one) It was a glitch at first but became the basis of the combat system. And the Dead Island one (already patched I think) where you could throw and drop a melee weapon at almost the same time actually duplicating the weapon, which meant you would never lose that special hardhitting weapon of your desire.
Megaman 3.
Hold on the UP on the second controller and jump into a pit. You “die” but can jump right back out. You are invincible and gain a super jump ability. The only down side is you are no longer able to use your regular weapon, but your gained weapons work just fine.
