There are three constants in both the film and gaming industries and that is quality, lack of quality and sequels. Anything will acquire a sequel so long as it shifts enough unit/tickets the first time around irrespective of quality. Whether these things deserve sequels or not is entirely subjective, but they’ll likely get one anyway if someone feels there are a couple of dollars to be made. There are plenty of films and games that justify revisiting in sequel form and then more than a few which just change a detail here or a control option there, repackage themselves and shout about how awesome they are.
But possibly the most annoying combination in the world comes when a great game or film gets a lousy sequel. There is nothing more unsatisfying than seeing one of your favourite titles being torn apart by a half-baked, ill conceived monstrosity of a sequel that has little love or compassion for what came before it. Games and films, which instead of proudly bearing the hallmarks of quality, merely serve to shamelessly plunder some cash from our expectant wallets.
The following is a run down of ten such games. Games which the world would have been better off without.
10. Star Wars: Knights Of The Old Republic 2 – The Sith Lords
Although to some level we could add the Star Wars: The Old Republic MMORPG to this as well, at least that didn’t feel like a half-finished scrap book rip off of a game, which is more than we can say for KOTOR2. Where Knights of the Old Republic put the RPG back on the gaming landscape to a large extent, Knights 2 was a cheap reworking of the same maps and ideas, offering nothing new. It looked like there had been absolutely no work done upon the character modelling or textures of environments and the campaign was about six minutes long from start to boring finish. The so-called story line was massively disappointing and offered nothing we hadn’t seen in the last game. The only redeeming feature of this title is that by virtue of being exactly the same as the previous title, we still got to play with our Lightsabers.

I’d have to agree with Silent Hill Homecoming, I enjoyed it as a game but felt it was too undeserving of the Silent Hill title. Far too action heavy, Downpour however, really revived the series- in my opinion anyway.
I always felt sorry for KOTOR 2, because it was due to an impossible schedule that it was unfinished. I think the writing had the potential to be the best of any Star Wars game. It really had the potential to be better than its predecessor which was never met, in my opinion.
Agree that Downpour changed the direction again for Silent Hill which was definitely a good thing. Homecoming was just too smooth.
With KOTOR 2 they had no choice but to rush it out. I remember at the time thinking that it was too quick when they advertised it. I was waiting for KOTOR 3 but it never came and TOR just doesn’t cut it for me.
Thanks for the comments gents :)
I never played True Crime: Streets of New York based solely on how bad the first one was. Cool concept, bad execution.
I mean, Chinese wizards, c’mon!
Although I would agree that True Crime was never a classic, it had some solid foundations which were decimated in the sequel. Shame really as it left the genre completely in the hands of gta until the likes of Saints Row added some competition.
Good list but I was let down Ninja Gaiden III wasn’t on it. The first two were ridiculously hard. Hell, I even died in the “Tutorial” of the first one before I learned to take it seriously. The third one wasn’t put together in the same way and was a major let down.
Agree completely. Ninja Gaiden 3 was a MAJOR let down. The biggest problem is that developers seem to all be following in this trend of action is better than (insert original game concept here), i.e. Dead Space’s evolution, Resident Evil, etc. Why do they insist on alienating their original fan-base by trying to make the game more market friendly? I for one loved Ninja Gaiden the way it was. Tough as hell. Smart. It genuinely makes you feel like you’ve achieved something even by eliminating the most seemingly easy opponents because it forced you to think, not button-bash. I couldn’t allow myself to finish Ninja Gaiden 3 because it hurt my soul as well as my Xbox controller.
Hi German – never played it…will put it on the list. The very, very long list.
Jeremy – looks like the last one did :) Sorry for the trouble though.
Nice list Adrian.
