10 Most Disturbing Video Game Commercials

From the ingenious to the insane, these weird video game ads will stick with you forever.

Watching a commercial for a video game that just shows in-game clips never comes close to capturing the joy of actually playing it. Even with recent AAA titles, there's something hollow about watching an 'actual game footage' ad, and you're more likely to rely on a review from a trusted publication than a 30-second TV spot. Video game publishers know this, and they know that they need to get creative and sometimes outright crazy with their commercials if they're to make their game or console get entrenched in your sub-conscious. As a result, video game commercials have the potential to be among the weirdest out there, and looking back through history, they've lived up to this potential. Who would've thought that Nintendo's ads could be so bleak, or that . Then, there are the ones from failed ventures like the Sega CD and Atari Jaguar, whose chaotic commercials now look like desperate screams for people to pay attention to them. Weirdness is a route-one way to make commercial memorable, but getting weirdness right isn't an easy thing...

10. Nintendo 64 - Does Your Dad Cross-Dress? Blackmail Him!

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nbEfnBl5v28 The N64 was a family-friendly console. As with most Nintendo systems, it relied on its classic cast of colourful characters to bring its loyal NES and SNES users rocketing into the 3D era. Why then, did Nintendo opt for a bleak ad about a cross-dressing father busted by his son? This isn't a 'Rocky Horror' lets-embrace-our-fluid-sexuality vibe either. It's the story of a troubled father, eternally humiliated in front of his son, who then forces said son to keep a lifetime secret from his own mother. But who cares about the emotional scarring and lifetime of awkward family dinners that face this kid, because now he can blackmail his dad to buy him an N64 game! Even better, grandad wears tights too, so presumably he can also be extorted.
