10 Most Terrifying Moments in Gaming History

10. Metal Gear Solid 2 €“ Turn Off Your Console!

There€™s a moment toward the end of Metal Gear Solid 2 where shit gets real. Really real. Colonel Campbell and the other codec characters start talking to€ to you. Not to Raiden, but to you, the player. Suddenly this game is acknowledging itself as game, quoting dialogue from other games and telling you that you€™ve been playing for too long and should turn off the console. http://youtu.be/ul8j9I90ueM Maybe it was this breaking of the fourth wall, maybe it was the eerie, computer modulated drone of Col. Campbell, maybe it was the fact that I actually had been playing the game for too long, and it felt like maybe it had finally happened - maybe I€™d finally lost my mind €“ whatever it was, this moment didn€™t half scare the shit out of me. Konami have a pattern for going after the player as opposed to the character (it happens a lot throughout the Silent Hill franchise too €“ more on that later) and despite the fact that this isn€™t a horror game, this moment is no less terrifying.
