It's fair to say that video games are getting easier, largely thanks to dynamic checkpoints, liberal saves and, uh, developers actually wanting you to finish their games nowadays.
But there's still something to be said for a game that doesn't stump players with cheap enemies or lousy design, but offers up a puzzle that well and truly makes the brain ache.
These 10 games, from the earlier annals of gaming history through to more recent hits, all served up at least one absurdly challenging brick wall of a puzzle, and one which surely had most of us using a guide, finding a YouTube video or, in earlier days, even calling a tip hotline.
Now, there are always going to be those fiendish games which deliberately inhibit players from seeking outside help - The Witness' "The Challenge", for instance, is a ludicrously difficult puzzle that's uniquely produced by an algorithm every time and boasts a brutal time restriction.
But these 10 puzzles, whether hiding answers in plain sight or literally requiring the community to pool their ideas, at least played fair enough to offer up a single, static solution.
Also, if you needed any further reason to hate Konami, they're coincidentally responsible for four of the brain-busting puzzles on this list...
