For years the Super Nintendo CD add-on was one of the most discussed and at the same time most unknown entities in the company’s illustrious history.

Everybody knew that Nintendo had teamed up with Sony to create a CD add-on for their Super Nintendo console, but nobody really knew what became of it - until 2015 when a prototype version was found in storage by somebody who had formally worked with the CEO of Sony Interactive Entertainment.

The prototype was fully working, and had been tested with existing SNES cartridges, but no CD software was found.

The project was cancelled after Sony and Nintendo fell out over the way the rights for the console and its add-on would be managed. Nintendo wanted full rights for the hardware, leaving Sony with the software, but Sony wanted more than that. Nintendo were unwilling to budge on their terms so terminated the agreement with Sony and took up another with Philips before dropping the idea completely due to the relative failure of the rival Sega Mega CD.

We all know what Sony ended up doing with the PlayStation hardware, and I am sure that Nintendo regret their actions to this very day.
