5. Ryu Hayabusa

Alongside the aforementioned Tenchu series, there is no truer ninja assassin experience than the Ninja Gaiden games. The star, Ryu Hayabusa, wields his blades with trademark brutally efficiency. For nearly 25 years, the series has been renowned for its challenging difficulty and violence and in that time, Ryu has become one of the most iconic assassins in video game history.

4. Shadow

The only assassin on this list who isn't the main character of the game he's featured, Shadow is a fan favourite from classic RPG Final Fantasy VI. Known for his superb combat skills, interesting back story and attack companion Vector, Shadow quickly gained a reputation as one of the most popular persons in the entire Final Fantasy series. He was at the top of most players lists to get back when the party disbands midway through the game. He also might have one of the most memorable & controversial introducing lines in video game history "That's Shadow, he'd slit his mama's throat for a nickel!"

3. Ezio

Probably the most suave and charming assassin we've seen, Ezio Auditore da Firenze is the star of Assassin's Creed II, Brotherhood and Revelations. Over the course of the three installments, Ezio's adventures spanned decades and continents, eventually honing him in to one of the greatest Master Assassins in the history of Assassin Brotherhood. Even though his purpose was not necessarily as important as Ezio himself first thought, he is a legendary assassin in his world and ours.
