13 Most Stupidly Difficult Video Games In History

6. Rogue Legacy

It's rare you come across an idea in the world of 2D platforming that's completely original, but Cellar Door Games' Rogue Legacy is just that, mixing extremely cutesy visuals and a wicked sense of humour with a game engine that'll take your face off at a moment's notice if you let it. Playing as an ongoing family bloodline of Knights, you'll tackle a castle on by one with each subsequent death letting you choose from three successors that will have randomised stats. The only things that carry over are certain buffs you can invest cash in that you've plundered from a previous run, as well as locking down the area layout itself if you've happened upon one you like. Oh did we not mention? The castle is randomised too, as are the placement of the bosses, so each run can be completely different if you don't opt for the gold-reducing lockdown option. In terms of presentation its unmatched, oozing personality with Magic: The Gathering-style stat-cards and giving your Knight affectations like 'Chronic Flatulence', 'Gigantism', being short-sighted (so everything around the edge of the screen is blurry) or vertigo (making you play upside down). As you can tell it's all pretty ridiculous, but this level of charm goes a long way in just making you love everything on offer, rather than getting too annoyed when a random screen-sized ghost brings you down.
