15 Most Mind-Blowing Video Game Plot Twists Of The 2000s

"Raiden, turn the game console off, right now"

You just can't beat a ruddy good plot twist; the feeling of many previous hours of either film, TV, book or game suddenly being rethought as the unexpected unfurls right in front of you, the realisation that all was never as it seemed - the absolute insanity that all you once held dear is now left in tatters, and all that's left to do is don your best Sherlock cap and reassemble what's left. Granted, some games do it better than others - look to the likes of Red Dead Redemption or any of the Metal Gear Solid's for masterclasses in reversing expectation, for better or worse. Let's take a step back for a second though. Games will always have the monopoly on audience agency, being they're the only medium where you're actively participating in pushing the plot forward. Opening the door into the mysterious haunted house, firing the bullet that stops the evildoer finishing his plan, escaping the collapsing structure or being the pivotal cog that turns the entire game's narrative with you at the centre, there's rarely enough noise made about just how satisfying and impactful these moments can truly be. So, in the spirit of celebrating and recommending the best table-turning head-scratchers around, I've compiled 15 that knocked me for six but kept me thoroughly enthralled all the same. Let everyone know your own favourites in the comments below, and obviously, there'll be spoilers. Note: All of our 2000s lists are from 2000 through 2009, so if you'd like a rundown of the best from 2010 onwards, check this out.
