20 Greatest Zombie Games Ever

The most fun you'll ever have trying to avoid your brain getting eaten!

Zombies in video games isn't just a short-lived fad. In the last half decade or so, the shambling undead have become ridiculously popular with gamers. Every other indie game on Steam Greenlight seems to feature survival in a zombie apocalypse, and even the AAA studios have been keen to implement some sort of zombie-based game mode in many of their mainstream releases. It shouldn't be too big of a surprise that zombies have become such popular video game enemies. It just takes one glance at their key characteristics to see that they're perfectly suited to the medium. For example, zombies are mindless and stupid. Therefore, dodgy AI in which a member of the undead shuffles repeatedly into a lamp post is more forgivable. Zombies are also hugely adaptable. They can vary from traditional Romero shufflers to 28 Days Later-esque sprinting screamers. Improving technology has also allowed for impressively large hordes of these undead monsters, with some games being able to handle thousands of the things on-screen at once. This list takes a look at the 20 greatest zombie games ever made. We'll only be including games (or game modes) in which zombies are the main focus, disallowing titles in which zombies appear among a plethora of other, unrelated enemies. So sit back, tuck into a can of cold beans, make sure that your front door is fully boarded up, and enjoy this countdown of the finest in zombie-themed entertainment!
