It has come to my attention that even with the large presence of myths and legends in popular culture, it baffles me that the following characters have not yet made their way into a mainstream video game title.
For those of you not entirely acquainted with Greek mythology: Dionysus knows how to party. Known as the god of ritual madness and ecstasy, this dude will throw you for a loop.
Every ghastly, sinful, ludicrous activity can find a history with Dionysus. To think that designers and developers have forgone the opportunity to include him in a Leisure Suit Larry-style brawler where players are pit against bouncers and goons of all shapes and sizes in search of the ultimate party is unbelievable. Sure the last Leisure Suit Larry release didn’t really hit its stride according to vgchartz but a game highlighting the antics of Dionysus still sounds like an intellectual property that can have a lot of elbow room in terms of how it can be incorporated.
For one, Dionysus is a god.
If we, as consumers of all things video games, have come to understand anything from hit franchises such as God of War, it is that gods are cool. Especially when gameplay compliments other aspects of a title, developers can have their way with every scene described in Edith Hamilton’s ‘Mythology’ – a comprehensive history of both Greek and Roman mythology. Sure there are a lot more deities out there who are known to pack a bigger punch, but if our culture has taught us anything its that people like to have a good time. Why not have a blast with a guy who’s been doing it for more than a millenia?
