Since the recently released Mass Effect 3 is the final game featuring long time protagonist Commander Shepard, any new games going forward in the franchise will likely be somewhat separate from the main trilogy.
Without further ado, here’s five suggestions for how the Mass Effect franchise could continue without Shephard…
1. Mass Effect: First Contact
Pretty self explanatory, and one that is often requested. Set around the events of the First Contact War, or Shanxi Incident. For those who don’t know or don’t remember, the First Contact War was humanities first meeting with the Turians, a race that is iconic in galactic politics. Rather than cooperating, the two engaged in a bloody war that bought resentment still around 30 years later, in ME1, 2 and 3.
2. Mass Effect: Redemption
A smaller title based on the comics. If Bioware got more creative, and built the game with newer tech and around a two-player co-op mechanic, this could really work. Also, story choices would be cool to include to offer something different to people who have read the comic.
The story of the comic series revolved around Doctor Liara T’Soni and her acquaintance, a Drell named Feron, recovering Shepard’s body for Cerberus after he or she was killed by the Collector’s at the start of ME2. Sound familiar? It should, because this comic series was the backstory of the Mass Effect 2 DLC, Lair of the Shadow Broker.
I won’t spoil it for people who haven’t read or played either, but this would provide cool perspective into those events for people who haven’t read the comic.

Long time fans have cringed at the thought of a squad based shooter set in the Mass Effect Universe. We don’t need another first person shooter multiplayer game. COD, Battlefield, and MOH have been overfilling the market. I agree on all the others though I worry that the one of the Earth soldier would just be like a ME Battlefield as well
I like the Matriarch idea a lot. Perfect plot device in the nature of the Asari living for hundreds of years could definitely provide a way to see not only just one era later after ME3, but could even jump to different time periods seeing the results of your actions play out in a single game. The idea of the Asari could be really strong in a franchise designed around choice and consequence. And making such huge choices–like the death of a species or alliance with another–could really be seen within the thousand year lifespan of an Asari with Commander Shepard’s level of importance.
Maybe the game could even follow a new character that you could customize yourself, although Liara would still work perfectly since she’s a younger Asari with huge influence as the Shadow Broker.
This is my article on ideas for the next Mass Effect:

or we could just let sleeping dogs lie…it was a good run for the Mass Effect Universe but id rather see it end in a blaz of glory than to be dredged to the bedrock with a bunch of spin offs..so many that the epic story that was the mass effect trilogy becomes a vague memory…why cant people just move on to other series and maybe just ocassionally replay the mass effect games for nostaligas sake..
The obvious best idea ever is to use the ME engine to make a Star Trek game!
