This year’s Summer of Arcade kicks off with hotly anticipated Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater HD on July 18th. The Summer of Arcade has long since been Microsoft’s way of introducing some of the very best downloadable games to the XBLA service, and with titles such as Dust : An Elysian Tail and Deadlight to look forward to, that tradition seems set to continue this summer.
With that in mind, we take a look at some of the best, must buy XBLA games to appear on the service so far…
7. Castle Crashers
Developer : The Behemoth – 1200 Microsoft Points
The original XBLA smash hit from 2008, Castle Crashers is a simple side-scrolling beat-em-up set in a fictional medieval universe. I’ll warn you right now, if it’s a rich story experience your after then you’re out of luck as Castle Crashers keeps its fiction simple. To begin with you play as one of four knights, charged with rescuing the princesses and recovering a stolen magical gem, pretty standard stuff right? However, what Castle Crashers lacks in the story department, it more than makes up for it with its simple yet fiendishly addictive single player experience utilising a enjoyable yet quirky visual atheistic and humour that transitions between ‘that made me chuckle’ to ‘holy crap! what the fuck is up with this game’ levels of lunacy.
The actual game itself can be beaten in a few hours or so, but there are plenty of secrets, character unlocks and high scores to beat that will keep you coming back for more even after the credits roll. The game also supports co-operative multiplayer both locally and online, and arguably is the best way to spend the majority of your time with Castle Crashers. Get two or more friends together and the game really comes out of its shell with up to four of your friends all battling it out co-operatively to defeat bosses, conquer worlds and shout obscenities over your headsets.
It may be starting to show its age, but Castle Crashers can still stand up against the best of them.
