8 Best PS4 Multiplayer Games You Can Play Offline

Who says that local multiplayer is dead?

There was a dark time, about four to five years ago, when it looked like local multiplayer games might be a dying breed.

Everything was going online, split-screens were being denied their little corners on peoples' TV screens, and publishers repeatedly expressed that the future lay in the online realm. But with the steady rise of indie games in the past few years, as indicated by their crucial role in the PS4 vs. Xbox One console war, we've seen a mini resurgence in same-screen multiplayer; evidence, if ever we needed it, that gathering a bunch of friends in a room and gaming the night away isn't as archaic a pastime as visiting a Victorian freakshow.

And it looks like certain AAA publishers have followed suit, seeing that there is indeed a demand for it and therefore money to be made. From the player's point of view, local multiplayer brings perks simply not possible in the online realm; drinking games, punching the arm of the person next to you, and doing a hip-thrusting victory dance right in the stupid face of the person you've just vanquished.

There are still a few AAA games out there that continue to fly the offline multiplayer flag, giving us hope that first-person shooters may one day recapture some of that GoldenEye multiplayer magic, or that we'll one day see a Bethesda RPG with co-op gameplay included (Elder Scrolls VI, anyone?) In the meantime, here are the greatest offline multiplayer PS4 games you can find today.
