Batman: Arkham Knight - 10 Big Story Moments Fans Will Debate For Years

Joker's blood can do WHAT exactly?!

Arkham Knight may only be a little over a month into its release, but its story is already proving to be one of the most divisive in all of Batman's media output yet. Its narrative themes - whilst exemplary in premise - are often executed poorly, and much discontent has arisen as a result of Rocksteady's vision moving against what many would consider to be the norms of the Bat-mythos. This isn't to say that the story is dire by any means, but it certainly wobbles in areas where previous titles had exceeded. On the other hand Rocksteady's writers actually reinvented and rectified a number of storylines from the comics medium, utilising tropes from different segments of Batman's many iterations to carve out their own unique vision for the World's Greatest Detective. This leaves critical consensus at somewhat of a crossroads, but this shouldn't have been too surprising for long time followers of the Caped Crusader. Whilst a feature of both Asylum and City, veteran Batman scribe Paul Dini (who first made waves in the industry on a little old show called Batman: The Animated Series) was all but absent from the writing process of Arkham Knight, and it certainly shows. Many of the loose threads established in City are relegated to small side-missions, or worse still, not explored at all. Indeed, the studio's decision to move 'in house' with the narrative process was never going to be something everyone could get on board with, and the debate it has inspired will last for many years to come.

Content Producer/Presenter

WhatCulture's very own resident movie guy, Ewan has been working in the content creation biz for over 10 years now, having started as a freelance contributor to WhatCulture Gaming all the way back in 2015. After graduating with a First-Class Honours in History from Northumbria University in 2017 (where he won a prize for a totally killer dissertation on the Watergate years), Ewan took on the role of Comics Editor at WhatCulture and quickly developed WhatCulture Comics into one of the biggest superhero-focused channels on YouTube. He followed this with a brief hiatus at Screen Rant in 2021, where he worked across the Gaming and Film sections as a writer and editor, before returning to WhatCulture as a Senior Content Producer / Presenter in 2023. He started his own podcast, We Love Dad Movies, in 2022, and has contributed several written pieces to the Eisner-nominated comics website Shelfdust as well. In his current role, Ewan incorporates his love of cinema, comic books, and history into written pieces and video essays for WhatCulture's Film & TV channel, as well as WhatCulture Gaming and WhatCulture Horror, with a particular focus on nineties-era Dad Movies, old school Westerns, and Golden Age Hollywood Noir. John Carpenter is his fave, and he thinks Batman Beyond should never have been cancelled. If that's your vibe, you'll probably like his stuff.
