The world of video games is possibly one of the most hotly debated and fruitlessly argued over when it comes to quality; whether it’s PC gamers’ 500 foot high horse of ‘superior graphics’ or console gamers’ fruitless Battlefield vs Call of Duty debate which PC gamers laugh off from their thrones of self-imposed superiority: the debate is constantly raging.
Whilst more interested people may spend their time debating the nuance’s of a games particular graphic design; I trouble myself with fun, story and general enjoyment when it comes to prioritising my gaming favourites: which brings us to San Andreas.
As the moons continue to pass and GTA 5′s release draws even closer; it’s led to much melancholic looking back on the gaming world before this bound-to-be critically acclaimed Goliath comes to our consoles and the debate on video game greatness is reopened, but before that we look back to an earlier Grand Theft Auto installment; it may not have been the most graphically revolutionary or mature game ever made, yet it’s audacity, skill and commitment to the idea of complete fun not only makes this the greatest GTA, but the greatest game of all time.
Here are 50 characters, missions and anything else that takes my fancy as to why…
50. The Weapons
From guns, to swords, to sex toys, this gave you tools of destruction in any which way you desire.
If you enjoy tanks, drive bys or fighter jets they are all available, the range of which murder was available to such an extent that you can spend most of your time experimenting with and improving your ability before actually doing anything.

#30 “…no-one is sad to here…”
Please go back and revisit high school. You hear with your ears, and here is your present location.
Several additional grammatical mistakes ruined this article.
My apologies; but I think if you’re sad enough to let misplaced grammar ruin your day you have issues.
Seconded: the grammar in this article is dire! It would seem that whilst a pilot needs to be able to fly and a soldier needs to be able to shoot, a journalist doesn’t need to be able to write. Or, as is abundantly clear, be respectful to his readers. Poor show. Clearly it is you who has the issues, friend. It’s a pity that poor journalism had to taint the sentiment behind this article, because I happen to agree with you about SA being the best thing ever to have hit the gaming world. Let’s hope that V can change that, eh?
A lot of your reasons are repeated in different words. You really have like 30 reasons. And graphics is most certainly a bad one.
As for graphics it was great for its time especially for an open world game filled with so much to do. People get so wrapped into graphics or multiplayer these days which there is nothing wrong with that. The thing is the story is where it’s at! If you can combine a hard hitting story with great graphics as did GTA San An back in 04′ then hell yeah!
I had a couple of great laughs reading this (“the yay is leaving San Fierro again!”) and I thought the selection of highlight missions was remarkably similar to what I would have picked. My only gripe is that “funny and interesting” seems to be the only way any of the characters were described – apart from that, a nostalgic and entertaining read
asewome article!
What? No BMX riding? That was the best part of the game! Still great review!
this is ridiculous and laughable. San Andreas was a GOOD game. It had a lot of good concepts. But the story and the characters were garbage. I’ve never had so little fun playing the story of a GTA game. Playing as a dumbass hood rat trying to take over a city. It had very little substance. It was also annoying having to run back across the ENORMOUS map every time some stupid gang decided they wanted a slice of my pie. It was still a good game, but id take Vice City or GTA 3 over San Andreas any day.
GTA IV was a complete masterpiece and so was GTA SA but GTA IV was the best game of the century
(IMO) No arguments.
FIFA 13 Demo on PC out
GTA V FTW
The fact that 8 years latter there are still fans that come back to a game that they have completely explored speaks for itself. It’s a beloved game more so than most games in the past decade. GTA SA the best? I’ll reserve judgement till GTA5 comes out. Is it the best of the last generation games? Definitely.
