The announcement of Quantic Dream’s next title was by far my most anticipated moment for E3 this year, and after what has (for me) been a hugely disappointing event, my hopes were all pinned on it being awesome.
Admittedly I was a late comer to Heavy Rain, purchasing it for a measly £10 a long while after release, and that was perhaps the greatest gaming bargain I have ever picked up. From that moment on, I’ve been chomping at the bit to get my hands on another Quantic Dream title, or even just have a glimpse of what is to come.
No pressure then. Expectations high? Check. Massive risk of disappointment? Check. Still excited? You can bet your arse I am, and any fans of Heavy Rain should be too.
Beyond: Two Souls looks to continue the Heavy Rain feel of a mature, narrative driven title based on heavy interaction through various button pressing sequences. On paper, still not the most exciting sounding gameplay, but in practice hugely involving.
From the gameplay footage and such, it would seem that Beyond will be of a more sci-fi/supernatural mirth than Heavy Rain, with one of the playable characters being a spectre named Aiden. The main protagonist, Jodie Holmes, is played by the excellent Ellen Page, which in itself is a huge reason to get excited by this game.
Hopefully Beyond will be as engrossing and emotional as Heavy Rain, and with the inclusion of a multitude of results depending on how you play the game, it will surely have the same replay ability factor.
Quantic Dream are known for taking their time to make the game all they wanted it to be, so I’m confident they’ll deliver yet again. Don’t expect it to be out anytime soon for this same reason, I’d be surprised if we saw it hit shelves in 2012. In the meantime, enjoy the E3 trailer and 25 minute gameplay footage below.
