EA Have Cancelled Knights Of The Old Republic 3 MULTIPLE Times

Anthem better be worth it.

A week or so after it was revealed that they were cancelling EA Vancouver’s open world Star Wars game - which was originally Visceral’s before they were also given the boot - EA is once again in the firing line in regards to its handling of the coveted Star Wars licence.

The publisher making Star Wars games should have been a match made in heaven. They had Visceral and Amy Hennig on the story-driven front, DICE on the multiplayer FPS front, and Respawn doing whatever the hell they wanted. But - most importantly - they had Bioware to continue the beloved Knights of the Old Republic series.

Obviously that hasn’t materialised outside of support for the MMO, with the studio being put to work on Anthem instead. Apparently, though, it hasn’t been for lack of trying. Answering a question on Twitter, Kotaku reporter Jason Schreier said that, from what he’s heard, Bioware have tried to make a new Knights of the Old Republic happen more than once, with no luck. On the one hand, this seems like EA burning money. The original game (and its underrated sequel) are considered some of the greatest RPGs of all time. On the other, it’s entirely in-line with EA’s current development philosophy.

Back when Visceral’s title was canned, it was made clear that the company were moving away from story-driven titles in favour of a games-as-service approach, so you can see why they wouldn’t let Bioware go against that to make a relatively straightforward RPG. The studio is known for these kind of experiences, but even then, with Anthem they’ve had to evolve to create a rich story experience within a Destiny-like multiplayer shooter service.

Even if the writing was on the wall, it’s still disappointing, and once again is a testament to how misjudged EA’s whole approach to the licence has been.
