FIFA 13 is a technical and football gaming masterpiece which outshone its predecessor quite embarrassingly. However with every masterpiece comes failings, with Angelina Jolie’s curves comes Angelina Jolie’s face, for every The Matrix comes a Matrix Revolutions and for every sublime aspect of FIFA comes commentary done by Clive Tyldesley…just why?
After sampling FIFA in all its many glories, being wondered by the first touch system, hating the first touch system and discovering that £90 million plus Carlos Tevez is a correct price for Lionel Messi; I feel myself educated enough to highlight 5 features in FIFA 13 that they have failed to fix, or just don’t work and could potentially ruin the playing experience.
1. The Commentary
Usually I try to deaden the commentary out, but this addition brings with it such preposterously over the top levels of ridiculous punditry that I actually think I’m watching the match on Sky, which is not what anybody wants.
First off, a lot of the commentary is recycled from FIFA 12 which isn’t a massive issue, football matches are football matches, so you expect a lot of situations to repeat themselves but for one of the biggest earning gaming franchises in the world to copy and paste aspects that should be updated just smacks of laziness.
However then you get to the new commentary and you think you would choose to listen to an audiobook rendition of Katie Price’s autobiography voiced by Joe Pasquale than hear what these people have to say.
Martin Tyler’s opening lines to a Semi-Final cup match is embarrassing; ‘Which one of these teams will get to the final? We know one will get to the final, but which one will it be today…who gets to the final…It’s the final next…Final.’
Furthermore any keeper concedes a goal and later makes a save is referred to as ‘making up for being an abysmal excuse for a goal keeper, and a man’; funnily enough not every keeper who has conceded a goal has been awful and the constant referral to every keeper who has conceded as the worst keeper in all of history is like something you’d read on the twitter page of David De Gea’s supporters club.
Finally, and oh the most tragically, if anyone you play tries the offside trap, it will be mentioned, 30-40 times in the match. Now there’s bad commentary and then there’s just that.
You think FIFA would put more effort in to something which is featured in every single match; but they just don’t care.

Too right about the commentary and the keepers getting called poor for letting in 1 goal in from about 10 shots. Funny stuff.
You’re wrong about ultimate team though. You can get 100 chemistry by simply having players from the same league on your team. You can also in fact (providing you’re rich, in-game) get that dream team of Messi/Ronaldo/Robben. This would be done by making a hybrid of players who share enough features with each other to get full chemistry. Messi and Ronaldo have the league links, and if you put Ozil up front somewhere, he would link up with Robben, as well as the other two.
The other stuff is fairly accurate though.

When a substitution takes place, you sometimes can not skip and it just shows the guy moving about for a good 10 seconds. Sounds like nothing, but really annoying. Also, why is it that when a player injures himself, regardless of how bad the injury is, is able to limp off the field. The commentator would say he had a broken leg for example, yet a second ago, he was able to walk off the pitch. Also, the defenders are still a bit retarded. End mini-rant
I’m not one for getting downloadable content as I’m a cheap ass :P
But if i could buy extra commentary’s i would. Its the one thing that gets a little mutinous after 40 hours :P
I giggled like a child when Clive Tyldesley said ‘he’s probing for an opening.’ But yeah, the commentary still leaves a lot to be desired.

What about when a match (in career mode) falls on transfer deadline day? IT GETS SIMULATED WITHOUT ANY PROMPT! Every season now starts (italian league) with a loss!!
This is a good article, but the Online Confidence part is very hit and miss. Surely there other features that could have been there instead? For example: There are moments in a match where you can’t get the ball of the other team, no matter what you do. And it just so happens that the score. Since when has Peter Crouch been able to run through players like Messi?
As for ultimate team the major thing affecting chemistry is the formation and position not the nationality or team they play for you can have a 100% chemistry team that doesnt contain a single player of the same team or nationality if they have the correct formation and position.
And you can skip your own celebrations by holding LB and RB at the same time (on XBOX not sure for other consoles).
You can’t have a team with 100 chemistry without any links, even with every player in the right position and formation. They would all have 6 chemistry which would be 66. Add a manager in the correct formation and that only gives another 10 to your overall chem. So 76.

I love the commentary – the commentators think very highly of me; I went for a 40-yard strike, saw it fly well over, commentator says:

Most annoying feature: career mode. It sucks that you can’t skip matches when you’re injured. Got a 3 month injury on my very first match and I got to wait for the simulations…..sucks.
If you go to calender, you can sim to date if you pick one. Worked wonders for me.
Well you wont believe what happened to me ingame FIFA 13 today.
Take this, so im in the attacking third, robben gets fouled near the 18 yard line and the ball ricochets off to someone else. Ref blows for a free kick and the ball gets given back to Robben where he was fouled, to take a quick free kick. Now Robben’s standing in an off-side position he was flagged offside even though he HADNT TAKEN THE FREEKICK YET?

I think Fifa 13 is the most frustrating game I have played. Most players I come across especially in UT, are all flash gordon. They run past my guys like they are not even there, and my guys are not slow statistically. Also, WTF is up with the ref. When opposition hassles me when I got the ball and my players go face first into the ground, the ref does nothing. But as soon as I hit circle like one or twice near the opposition, the ref whips that whistle out so quickly. It just feels like sometimes no matter what I do, the opposition have the upper hand, like it’s rigged. And the most annoying feature is after the game is over. WTF are we forced to watch replays. EA, let us skip because some people leave it running just to piss the loser off even more.

they should consider adding skip button during cutscene. its annoying when unnecessary highlight is playing while skipping some good shots/highlights. I think cutscene they should remove such as before substitute and skip button for celebrations. I always thought PES is better in handling the GUI while FIFA is good in gameplay. They also should consider FIFA main menu/button selection because as in the beginning im playing FIFA, im always confused which button i need to click. (I mean the flow/the GUI)
i hadnt played the game since november until this week i now remember why. refereeing is absolutely shambolic and so massively biased or inconsistent its not even funny a player can be chopped in half in the box nothing at all. u walk into someone they go down penalty. and then theres injury time ok the occasional match i can accept injury time dragging on a late goal being grabbed but 3 goals!!in what was supposed to be 3 mins worth of injury time. games are meant to be played for fun not to get wound up
fifa13 sux ea usa need research in correct reefing defenders have amazing reflex and block every shot they can run in attackers back and take ball ea forgot shield ball button also thee R1triangle pass is bugged 20 meter pass bounce to 2 meter haha this game only popular couse they can use real names so thanks fifa for giving ea monopoly what gives you the right to sell player names anyway
