Just how everybody thinks they can manage their football club much better, everybody has improvements they want to make to the Football Manager series. I have compiled a list of 10 things fans want to see in the upcoming installment of the popular football series.
Some of these are little ‘nitpickity’ things, and others are improvements which could be deemed quite necessary.
10. Change The Dugouts
I’ll admit this isn’t the most serious of changes necessary to the game but it is one that bugs a lot of people. Now admittedly I am an old fashioned Football Manager player and I still play on the 2D tiddlywinks view, however many people who play on the 3D view say that it annoys them how the dugouts take up nearly 2/3 of the pitch. Players seem to be sat metres apart and to the inexperienced player, it may come across as ‘dressing room disrupt’. Or not. But having smaller dugouts will just add to the realism and the solidity of the 3D match engine.

Brilliant Ideas for Football Manager 13, My two favourite’s must be the idea of introducing twitter and social networks into the game more. and let them have more of an impact. Personally I believe the Job Interview idea to be Absolute Genius. I’ve always wanted this to feature in a football manager game. SI Take notice !! Another successful article. Keep it up Connor :)
I would like to be able to withdraw a substitution. I have in the past made a change and in the next, sometimes 10 minutes, before the change is made by the game, he goes and scores. In the real world you would have the option to cancel the sub and leave him on but the game locks you out until the change happens.
So to sum this up, many of the wanted features on your wish list are for speed purposes. If new features are added year after year short cuts like these are vital. I see football manager have already covered a lot of the short cuts needed. But after playing and playing the game you find that more are still needed, unless usless features are taken away.
I also send my assistant to EVERY press conference. Although the initial excitement of speaking to the press was intriguing. It quickly faded. This needs solving.
The twitter idea is good but as Dave says the above would reoccur.
I would personnally like players to be even more unique. By this i mean personality on / off the pitch, unique style to his play. Messi should be unplayable. Ronaldinho should embarass your team and Gerrard should inspire the troops. At the moment i don’t really have any desire to own a player like this as a player with the right attributes does the job just as good or if not better. Its a very hard task as the game play has to steer well clear of being arcady. The realism is what makes the game so enjoyable.
Last of all i would love the crowds to sing clubs songs. Develope new songs and even chanting their heros name(it could be you). As long as its not repetitive. As the media, player comments, contracts, manager oppinions, team talks, team meetings… etc are already enough to take a lot of the enjoyment out of the game. With a little bit of imagination and developement. Correcting the annoying repetitions and making the game more unpredictable is what makes it fun. I don’t know how… thats your job :).
Brilliant article, some great ideas in it. Job Interview idea was great! I’d really like if you could do a little guest post on the same topic on our site http://www.footballmanagerblog.org/
Igor
I’d like the idea instead of a manager “feeling you could become friends” you could actually be friends which makes transfers between your clubs a little easier
Twitter- please NO. Who gives a toss what players say on twitter/facebook,
What i want to see is more realistic stadiums. Old trafford needs to look like the real thing as do lower league stadiums.
2: be able to send your staff on courses. IE pro liacenses ect while out of season. So coaches/scotes can improve.
3: Financial realism. Barcelona/Man utd are both heavily in debt. game needs to show this. Finacial fair play also.
4: SCANDAL- Imagine one of your players gets caught speeding/fails a drug test. gets taken to court by a page 3 star then land himself in jail.
5: Training, The whole thing needs a overhaul.
have a womens team / league aswell
I would like to see something done with career earnings,eg if you see a financially stricken club, you could buy with your earnings and become chairman? Just an idea
Great freakin idea. I would love the idea of owning a club instead of managing it. Have the ability to fire manager.
Because at the moment, I can suck a 300k/week contract out of Real Madrid but there is nothing I can do with that 300k/week. Makes no differences if I’m being paid 40k/week
This is a great idea, you could also have the option of starting a new club from scratch, picking the club name, finding a site for the stadium, recruiting players and even possibly finding investors/consortium members and other board members.
I think the twitter idea and the interview idea are both good, as is the scandal idea mentioned in a comment, i agree that a club could be bought with you as chairmen. i also feel that fifa manager has some things football manager doesnt and has had for years, like the ability to send backroom staff on training courses or the ability to build your own youth academies abroad, and add non football related facilities to your club to bring in cash like theme parks and cinemas. fifa manager has had these features for years and they would be brilliant if implemented properly into football manager
Steam work shop …..making the modding a lot easier and simple.
More on Youth, Academy status benefits, different youth teams etc….
there is great imbalance between classic and normal tactics view it is almost like the classic view allows u to win with little difficulty while the with new tactical view it is much more difficult to get consistent results..also certain functions available in classic tactics are not available in normal tactics, for example, in set pieces with the classic tactic, u can set many players to lurk outside box for corners which is advantageous because the markers will have to move with those players to a higher position near the edge of the box and if u set a player to attack near pose it is highly likely u will score… this cannot be done with the normal tactic view..also classic tactics automatically changes the tempo in real time according to what is happening in the match..i understand that the new view is to allow us managers to be more involved but the win rate with classic view is much higher than that of the new tactical view. Also,i created a duplicate of the classic view with the new tactical view and not surprisingly to me the new view underperformed severely.. i went from getting 6-0 to loosing easy home matches with essentially the same formation the only change being set pieces because of the limitation stated above. and now for the worst part, when using the classic view for long periods (2 or 3 months) instead of stat growth there was a rapid decline…i mean 3-4 stats that took months to increase. drop after 16 or so matches. I think this is because with the classic view, there are no specialized positions like poacher or advanced playmaker so the stats of the player that have increased as a result of them playing in a specialized position in the new tactic view decreases in the classic view by leaps and bounds. those are my major issues really, sort those out and its all good for me :)
The thing for me that make fifa manager better than football manager, is the stadiums. I would love to see real life stadiums in the game.
I like the idea of players being more unique. Like te idea of players doing things they shouldnt have and you having to make the decision of what to do for eg joey barton at qpr. More interaction with players would be great if your battling for the premier league or struggling to stay in the football league, you should be able to speak to club captains top strikers or young kids and try to inspire them to pick the team up and win games. I agree with more media things as its very repetitive and gets hugely annoying what about more interaction from fans and other managers saying thinga they shudnt wenger on taylor tackle dalglish on suarez these things would add a lot more realism to the game. Stab in the dark dont know if people will agree but what about a sky sports news to see whats happening in te rest of the football world? Rumours, interviews highlights leagues ect personally would love that idea!
Good suggestions – these would all improve the game as it is now. However, a massive part of the game where potential is wasted is the managers wages. At the moment they are just a score rather than having any purpose, whereas if you were able to buy into your club, or contribute towards transfer funds (to impress the fans/board, or favourable news coverage (again, to impress the fans/board) then it would open up a whole new realm to the game with very little coding.
The most exciting thing would be the ability to buy shares in the club you manage. As you buy into the club more you will reap ‘shareholders dividends’ which are already in the game, meaning you can put more money into owning more of the club. Imagine the day where you are your own boss on the game because you have earned it – build stadiums and training facilities when you please, have every penny of the transfer budget that you have earned or even revel in the demise of the club whilst nobody has the power to fire you.
1.Its so anoying thing with youth candidats. Im playing with PSG,haveing “State of art youth facilities” and “Well established youth recruitment”
and for 7 years in play, i didnt get even one single good player that have potencial of 4* or above.
2.When DC go back from atack to defense they are runing backward?! and allways slower than rival attackers.
3.More realistic transfer fees. Others clubs on example Man C or Man U can buy Neymar for at most 30M euros buth when i want to buy him,Santos want at least 60M !!
4.Building new stadium! I have estimated value 900M and stadium that was build 1897,sellouts about 10 times per year and board room dont even want to consider building new (thing it cant cost more than 200-300M)
5. It whoud be nice if you have big budget (i have now bout 200m ) and dont want to buy new players to invest that money in facilites or something else.
I like the idea of more realistic transfer fees. I was Man City once and i made a bid of £30m for jack wilshere but they wanted £76m and then David Silva at the time was worth £24m, Madrid offerd £31m payed in 48 months. Not only is that stupid and so unrealistic but Real Madrid get like £150m every year.
I completely agree! I hate when I invest money in my youth network to get it to state of the art, yet produce sub-par youngsters every season. It feels useless having a great youth set up in the game.
great game! is important to be more realistic when it comes to signing players, teams can not sign for bankruptcy and offers sign exorbitant, many teams players fichan not need them just because they are affordable, but to my best game esel
For the poster who stated that having a massive wage at a club makes no difference, you’re mistaken – larger the contract more job security you have at the club.
Would be surprised if they could add the twitter stuff for legal reasons and I think the trophy cabinet is already in the Steam version somewhere. Probably best idea of those is the travel fatigue.
My biggest gripe about the game is contracts. I tried to buy David Silva from Man City and he wanted £200, 000 p/w. The thing was he wasn’t needed by City and he was in the reserves. I think you should be able to interact more with the players, offering them a chance for first team football to negotiate a lesser wage, rather than making them a First Team player and then they want even more money!
I find in current FM12. It annoys me when i sell a player and he asked me to pay his wages till the end of the contract. But when i buy a player and cant afford his wages the deal falls through. I think a nice addition would be to be able to manage under 21 international teams and reserves and under 18′s team so you can really work your way up the ladder.
1.Managers having transfer tendencies – e.g Arsene Wenger invests in youth
2. Players talking to press more often – e.g before a match, about their manager etc.
3. Players having lives – having children (who can themselves become footballers), getting married, getting a divorce (and this affecting their morale and, by extension, their performances)
4. Having chats over the phone to other managers who consider you a friend – talking about a swap deal, a loan deal, a transfer (and possibly improving your relationsip/ buttering them up) and possibly a similar type of thing with players who consider you favoured personnel
5. More experienced players giving opinions on tactical tweaks and other such issues voluntarily + Player confrontation – a player has an issue and talks to you and you can’t end the conversation without giving him an answer instead of you always talking to him.
So, basically, you want to play ‘The Sims:Football Edition’.
I want to be able to talk to an agent in a private chat and ask him for the availability of his player and state the demands and how much I want him and that stuff. Would make signing a player a little more easier and more realistic.
I would like to see more realistic transfer budgets e.g u go Man u and get like £8m yet we have just seen them spend close to £40m also a SKY sports news window where it’s like there iPad app would be great where you can catch up on everything happening. As like all us fans I’m sure every manager out there has sky sports news on most of the time. I would also love to see more staff options like Doctor, appoint one of ur scouts as your chief scout, sprint coach, defensive coach like more big clubs have where you give them these jobs depending on there skill set. Also the ability to develop contacts through ur ex players who you were a fav person have retired and are coaching somewhere let u know about a good player at the new club things that real experienced managers gain over a period of time .
I’d like to see interviews in the game. But it wouldn’t secure you the job, or deny it. It’s simply stating to the chairman how you will run things.
I plan to bring in my own staff = Current Staff are mutually terminated
I plan to clear out dead wood = Sell off fringe players or not good enough players
I’ll be playing an attacking game.
I will strengthen the midfield
Etc.
If you fulfill all the things you said you would the board would be more favourable to your Board requests. Fail to fulfill your statements and the Board is less likely to accept board requests. They may also reduce budgets, or try to sign players on your behalf etc.
I’m sure there’s loads more that could be done with this feature. Like at Contract renewals for the current club. The board might ask you:
“We want to renew your contract but are concerned about the wage bill”
“I’ll sell some players on to reduce” or “I’ll adjust the transfer budget to balance the wages”
and tonnes of other questions.
If you don’t do what was discussed in the meeting there would be consequences from the Board. Like cancelling upgrading facilities or other things.
i’d like to see the board giving you extra coaches when trying to make an older player a coach. i have great coaches at Man Utd and i dont want to sack one just so i can have Giggs/Vidic as a coach.
How about media work? Maybe a weekly column for a newspaper or work as a TV/Radio pundit during the World Cup or the Euros.
Should be able to design your kits for the forthcoming season! even if its just choosing the colour of the away kit, would be a nice addition
What I’d like to see:
The opportunity to start my career at Step 6, and not have to rely on add-ons/editor to do it. Also, the opportunity to create your own club in Step 6 (a la Guernsey FC) and then try and build it up from scratch.
Press conferences are an essential part of determining a managers character. The questions you get asked by the press are far too repetitive so by improving these press conferences and using a bit more imagination, it would keep things interesting!
WOW 100,000 views! How did it get up so high !?
I like the developing club rivalries idea. New rivalries always develop and it would be good for the game to reflect this instead of just being stuck with the pre-set rivalries.
Interesting read. One thing I would defo like in the game is
More realistic transfer fees!! If a player is worth say £30 million, I should only have to pay at most 10-15 million more if he was the teams key player, not £60-80 million!! Especially when players go from other teams at more “normal” prices. Also, if the team is struggling financially, aka Man Utd, they would probably bite off your hand if the fee was anywhere near the players valuation.
Also, if one of your players is getting on a bit and you see him more of a squad player on the fringes of the first team, you should be able to interact with him telling him about this so when you change his contract type he doesn’t get angry.
Finally, it should be made easier to sell your fringe players at a big team, the transfer always breaks down as they demand extremeley high wages which the smaller teams always can’t afford. They should accept a wage cut more easily when transfer listed.
two more things i would like to see is: being able to befriend agents. gives something else for managers to think about…..also what about being able to start your career as a youth or reserve team manager and being able to build experience that way because even if you have international experience as a player it doesn’t mean you are wanted by every club going. gives the game more realism.
on another note, with interviews, cant you build staff characters so not all chairman want the wheeler dealer or so. if that was done it would take the so called generic right answers out. make it all a bit more challenging.
heres another tip too. with f.a. fines, or comments made to other managers or players….cant the board be effected by this because i constantly bash refs and am banned with no effect…that would enhance difficulties, with staff characters affecting chairmen as wished for too it makes a manager think more.
Steven Gilespie (Colchester) is far better finisher in the game then my 17 finishing 20million costing striker in Premier League! Say something about that!
I think that nations managers should have a contract as well. Currently for all the contract options it just says N/A which is unrealistic as all managers have a contract. This would also help managers go to manage nations which have a lot of money but not good players like Qatar.
I have a few new ideas about FM2013
1. I would like to see youth development drastically improved. I invest in a state of the art youth set up, but every season I get average if not, below average, youngsters coming through the ranks, which is very annoying! Also, the young talent I find with my scouting network, I would like to see their value increase based on their performances. So often I find a gem for a million, and after a year or two of 7.2+ ratings, his value is till a million, which makes no sense.
2. Often, my club makes great revenue through sales and sponsorship, and I usually have tens of millions left of unused transfer money. I would like to have more of a financial relation ship with my affiliate clubs, helping them to improve their financial situation in exchange for guaranteen playing time for my youngster.
*The Twitter idea people mentioned sounds interesting, its very realistic.
I can’t wait to get my hands on the new FM13. Here are some features I’d like to see in this years game:
- Better experience of the closing of the transfer window. We all sit glued to our tv screens ever transfer day, hoping and praying for our favourite team to sign that last piece of the jigsaw. Players jetting here and there to beat the deadline. Teams ringing each other to see if they are open to swaps and so on. Well I think it should play a larger part than it has in past FM releases.
- Also I’d like to see a function in which you can develope your ground, change ticket prices and design kits/produce merchandise to sell.
