It seems that Grand Theft Auto V might be coming to consoles as early as the end of May – far earlier than some might have expected the open-world epic sequel to have landed on shelves.
Or that is at least true according to games industry expert Michael Pachter, who told XBox 360 Magazine that he thinks GTA V will launch on the week immediately before this year’s E3, at the end of May:
“There has historically been a gap in the big hame releases beginning in May and running through August, and the few times someone was ambitious enough or late enough to launch in that window, the game typically dominated. Rocktar launched GTA IV, Red Dead Redemption and LA Noire in that window, THQ had its 2009 UFC game launch then, EA launched Battlefield: Bad Company in 2008, and all did pretty well.”
An earlier release would certainly make sense, because it would mean avoiding direct sales conflict with the other biggest releases of the year, which will see release in the traditional tent-pole October/November window – and most specifically, the new Call of Duty. Pachter went on:
“I think that GTA will compete with an autumn launch, but why run into Call of Duty head first when they can have the summer all to themselves?”
While that head-to-head would add a little spice to the Autumn market, splitting up the two biggest releases of the war will no doubt see a welcome response in the market, with sales for both perhaps enjoying a boost thanks to the lack of direct competition.
Jesse Divnich meanwhile wouldn’t be quite so drawn on the question, and stated it would either be May or October, but that it would definitely be 2012, and the game could well set new industry records, with the hallowed 25 million copies mark hit by Black Ops a firm objective.
Two industry experts mentioning May? Seems good enough to me, and the fact that Rockstar have previous in the pre-Autumn market serves as its own indication. Whatever the answer, it’s an unbelievably exciting release.

Ahem! You forgot about Max Payne 3 releasing in May. Rockstar/Take-Two would never release 2 games in the same month.
GTA 2 & Earthworm Jim 3D both released October 1999. Midnight Club & Smuggler’s Run October 2000. Smuggler’s Run 2 & GTA 3 October 2001.GTA Liberty City Stories & The Warriors were both released in October 2005.
All Rockstar projects. And besides – Rockstar North working on GTA V, and 4 other Rockstar devs working on Max Payne 3 doesn’t really represent stretched resources in my book.
Lol, Battlefield: Bed Company. Sounds racy.
Ha, woops. That was my own personal project…
I’d love to see it in May, but Rockstar has to be worried about cannibalizing sales. Granted, they are 2 different games with not entirely the same audience, but even a loss of 10% of GTA’s potential would be huge. On the other hand, who the hell is going to buy MP3 over GTAV? The MP audience is pretty niche, I guess.
One thing is for sure though, this ain’t 2005, and GTAV ain’t Liberty City Stories. That’s a non-argument. The evolution of the industry over the past 7 years makes that comparison laughable.

Whoops
I would much prefer GTA V over Max Payne anyday. There is a much bigger audience for GTA. So if they don’t want to put out two games in the same month, I say they shelve Max Payne for about three or four months after. Bigger profit for GTA. If not just sick it up a release them both.
I laugh at all these “it’s coming in May” articles. The obvious is in front of everyone’s face but they fail to see. Lets look at these release dates:
GTA2 (PS1): Oct. 25 1999
GTAIII: Oct. 22 2001
GTA:VC: Oct. 27 2002
GTA:SA: Oct. 26 2004
GTA:LCS: Oct. 24 2005
GTA:VCS: Oct. 31 2006
GTAIV: Originally scheduled for Oct. 16 2007 but delayed to Apr. 29 2008
GTA:CW: Oct. 20 2009
Hmm. Do you see a pattern there? It has even been mentioned in the past that the October release dates are intentional. I think that the fact that GTAIV got delayed and missed, is going to motivate them even more to make October this time.
Chinatown Wars came out March 17th, 2009
No, not a chance it comes out in May. I’d bet all my savings, house & family on it. October 2012 at the earliest.
whats rocktar? :D
I dont belive that grand theft auto 5 will be released in may because this game is supposed to be big and the tralier was only released 2 months ago and there’s not enough info yet to back up the date, no screenshots or videos of the game.
We really are getting desperate for things to say about this game aren’t we. It’ll be closer to Christmas than Easter, that’s for sure. Rockstar like to make surprises within each of it’s games but when it comes to release dates it tends to follow a similar path each time. As Josh has said here, this will be a huge game. If it were anywhere close to being released in 4 months time we would have see a lot more of it than just the one trailer.
Honestly like any die hard gta fan (which I am) i would love to get my GTA V on this simmer but realistically it probably wont be in on my TV til the fall. To be honest i would rather have them take longer to work out the bugs on the online play and map play but deep down inside if it was released in May I would be syked I saw the trailer instant GTA fever all over again san andres was the coolest map set up and it was friggin huge im curious to see how they made the adaptation to GTA IV graphics and realism and cant wait to piss away months of my life on this title can you say game of the year once again i have i high hopes and im sure rockstar wont leave me disappointed
I could wait until the end of the year for GTA V. Mainly because they can go back over the glitches and stuff like that. I’d stel like to see some spoilers, like the map, gameplay footage, etc. But not spoil the plot, they say it’s storytelling and stuff, like GTA IV’s movie-style story.
Everybody just wait a few weeks before jumping to conclusions. Rockstar claimed that more news was coming about GTA V in the coming month (i.e. February). I have a feeling that means the second trailer gets released soon, along with a huge series of stuff being announced.
With that being said, I predict October 16, 2012 as the release date.
