It was a great game and subject to unanimous critical praise, yet among fans of the Grand Theft Auto series GTA IV remains so very misunderstood, often dismissed as a letdown compared with sun-soaked previous entry San Andreas. But with it Rockstar shook up their cash cow of a franchise in a range of ways that went way beyond the usual superficial, incremental tweaks gamers are used to – and apparently remain satisfied by.
Instead of merely upgrading the graphics and adding a few more cars or guns, the studio tightened up the formula, improving the gameplay mechanics and becoming far more accomplished storytellers – in the process paving the way for Red Dead Redemption and L.A. Noire to follow. But what did we do? We moaned ungratefully and cried and spat the good work right back in their collective game developer face. Yes, GTA IV has been the object of much online belly-aching from the fan community.
This is why GTA V will suck. And make no mistake, dear reader, it’s all our fault.
Here are a few of the ways the franchise will inevitably have regressed when the game is eventually released, thanks to constant internet boo-hooing and ludicrous suggestions that “Saints Row is more fun”.

I cried with laughter at how wrong this entire article was. Sorry but…really? GTA V will be bigger and better than GTA IV and considering GTA IV was a step in the right direction in terms of gameplay, that can only be a good thing.
I LOVED the driving physics of GTA IV. Every car had its own feel to it. From the FBI buffalo to the blista compact. Anybody looking for more of a arcade driving experience should go grab NFS Underground 2 from their closet..

The hospital problem was solved by a flick at the phone to restart the mission, which was further improved on in EFLC which provided checkpoints.
The thing about moving onto next gen is that it does not provide the game to everyone, unless they also move along. Using the latest software and graphics does not make the game better, only prettier. If I were a game designer, I’d think on the issues of how many people will be able to pass the minimum requirements, rather than thinking how I will make GTA: Crysis.
Continuing a successful franchise is nothing to worry about, it is actually wanted. As the fanbase build up each release, everyone would be willing to purchase the next game knowing the company has succeeded thus far. This is why there are such huge sales upon release.
Options for Co-Op is given by choice, not mandatory. Just because there is an option for it, doesn’t mean you won’t be able to beat the game without it.
Last point would be, the game isn’t even out yet, making such statements is rather useless and laughable. You should give us 10 reasons why you would make reads like this, rather.

you actually listed no reasons to say the game “sucks”. I mean, the game may be bad (like GTA IV), but it won’t suck. Suck implies that it’s a badly made game and that the game itself isn’t fun. What you’ve listed is nitpicks and such that really don’t matter if you are just sitting down and killing people on it (like we all do on GTA).
No offence but some of these points are ridiculous.. I mean Fans of Gran Theft Auto are more than happy with what the game is.. thats why they love it soo much. Thats why people are soo exited about this title. soo why do people insist on it changing soo badly? Why change whats simply and beautiful… Call of duty tried to change thinking it would be great… PSSHHH rated worst game of E3.. people love sequels for what they are.. fair enought on improving graphics and a few other thing but DONT CHANGE THE CONCEPT!!! I agree with some of your points like the restarting at the hospital and the huge sandbox which takes forever to navigate. But most of the other points are a bit nitpicky.
I did like the Niko character and for the same reasons you did but that dosnt mean that I’m not going to like this games character if he happens to be anything ive already seen. You just have to look at Max Payne 3 and see that in many ways he’s a cliche character but Rockstar can still make you care about him. In many ways I found Max Payne far more memorable than Niko.
There are some elements I do hope they change like introducing checkpoints but all the smut and obvious Hollywood characters that I’m sure we will see are what makes GTA, GTA. There is normally an intelligent script underneath all the Juvenal stuff but without all the silliness, GTA5 would be a duller game.

After you respawn you have to drive back to the start of the mission? You did play GTA4 (or even Vice City) right? GTA4 had a replay option on your phone. Vice City had a taxi to take you back.

Whilst reading your 10 “reasons”, I found myself yelling out loud as if you were in the room with me. Your opinions are stilted at best. Un-happy. Okay, half if not ALL of the things you put on this is what makes Grand Theft Auto the way it is, it makes the fans happy and it keeps us amused. For example if we had no sandbox, what would we do? Grand Theft Auto is known for having the best known for having the sandbox games (besides the other games out there) but there known for having this kind of gameplay. If we take that away, what would we do after that? beat it again? Mafia II tried that but it got boring having to play the same mission over and over again and then having to start from the beginning.
And the part you mentioned about getting phone calls while playing was actually cool of rockstar to do that. It’s something new, true fans don’t want the same old game play like it was back in the early 00′s. What they did in GTA IV was cool. The fact that you can actually hang with the people you like during the main story was a sweet feature. Take that away and its just not fun to play after you do all the side missions and etc… It’ll just get boring after a while

Most of this is just complete nonsense but a few points need addressing.
First, what is the point of GTA if it ISN’T a sandbox/open world game? That is the main point of it and no one (except the writer of the article) is bothered about having to get to the other side of the map any more because GTA IV implemented this brilliant idea called ‘taxis’ which meant for a small price you could skip the entire trip. GTA wouldn’t work as a linear game, this is quite obvious to anyone who has ever played GTA.
Second, you bemoan the fact you return to a hospital if you die because you then have to travel back to the mission. Well that is a punishment for dying, seeing as how it is actually very hard to die in a GTA game even during the final mission which are typically the most difficult. Also, as addressed in the first point, you can just get a taxi or use GTAIVs system where a phone call restarts the mission for you.
Final point. You seem to think it’s so bad that V is being released on this generation due to graphics and PCs being far superior in this respect. Well if that’s the case just use a PC with graphics mods. Also it’s been 5 years since IV came out, waiting another year at least for the next gen consoles is just ridiculous. The financial reason for TT are far deeper than you make it sound as well, around 100million people own current gen consoles, that’s a potential 100million customers right there. Not many people are going to buy a next gen even in the first year of release so the customer base would be cut down to maybe 5 million or so, which could potentially bankrupt the company.

1. It has an even remotely customisable main character;
2. The game world doesn’t get smaller;
3. The car-handling becomes less realistic (I don’t even understand how you could think they will do this);
4. You can’t use a mobile phone;
5. It isn’t a linear corridor shooter;
6. Celebrities are parodied or made fun of;
7. Multiplayer is connected to the single player story;
8. It includes a game mechanic that has been part of the series for 15 years;
9. It doesn’t have brilliant, ground-breaking graphics that put it on par with the latest and greatest non-open world games; or

Despite the very arguable nature of most of your reasons for the game sucking, the main reason this is such a horrible article is because your talking about something you couldn’t possibly know about. The game has not been released and there has only been one trailer. So from that its impossible to tell how the game will control, the quality of the story line and characters, the themes portrayed, or the way they choose to market it. You are simply making assumptions and passing them off as fact so you can bash the game. Which is something that anyone who considers themselves a writer or journalist should feel deeply ashamed about. Non of the changes from GTA 4 (except for the absence of Niko)that you brought up have been confirmed. And seeing how rockstar has handled red dead redemption and L.A. Noir I doubt they would do anything to majorly impact their integrity as good game and story creators. I would hope that someone as seemingly intelligent as you would know not to judge something without any actual evidence of its quality, but clearly as this article has shown you don’t.

I personally feel the opposite regarding the evolution of Rockstars story telling. I liked ‘the man with no name’. I liked the scale and style of San Andreas. In fact the only thing I’m dredding is yet another Rockstar Games Tale of Redemption. EVERY game it’s some not quite a good guy/good guy, who is looking for his chance to live ‘the dream’… Give that shyte a rest, please. It wasn’t ever original, so let’s stop pretending it was. Bottom line: The bosses at Rockstar are assholes who have sales numbers backing them up. Either the game will sell or it won’t.
Excuse me, but I am totally unsure if I am being trolled right now. First an article that doesn’t approve of any of the details of the vast majority of the GTA franchise, and these kinds of comments? To first address your issues with the game of which few to NO details have been released, what makes you think they will become less realistic? The GTA series has continued to advance further and further into realism, and saints row currently dominates the unrealistic with it’s crude toilet humor. Why would GTA, the sandbox gaming giant, make a total 180° after gaining so much ground? As for story, it is evident by looking at rockstar’s list of games that they continue to grow mature, with more intriguing plots and tangled storylines. I remember playing games like midnight club 2 and gta3, games with no linear story. Now rockstar have games like red dead and max Payne, which show advanced graphics and story’s. Why would you expect different of gtaV? I am sure all will improve with time. And graphics are not even a major selling point, I mean, look at minecraft! No story, no plot lines, no objective, and poor graphics (but good resolution) It should be, by your standards, a horribly unattractive game, but it isn’t. It isn’t about the small things about the game, it all focuses on the fact that you are supposed to have a memorable experience. It isn’t if it is the most advanced, it’s about the joy it brings.

Honestly, your argument is invalid because it’s in San Andreas. And this whole blog was what you “think” will happen. I really hope they don’t change the whole system because I (and most definetely alot of other fans) like the way you respawn at a hospital after death. It gives GTA its authenticity.
I think a lot of people disagree with his opinion because
1. It’s only an opinion, and it’s proven that the chosen opinion of the readers is to disagree with the writer – we’re all entitled to that.
And 2. Most of these 10 points are simply based on assumptions about the game, when in fact – we know more or less nothing about the game, besides the location.
The GTA series has never failed to impress it’s audience, if it had, it wouldn’t be successful.

Ive always loved the Gta games since Gta1 on Ps1.
For me Gta4 was both fantasitc and saddening. Both for the same reason – the realism. The size and freedom of the game is breathtaking. But is it too realistic now? Does it worry you when you shoot a police officer in the game? Should it? Its just a game after all.
For me Gta san andreas was the pinacle of gameplay. Realistic enough but cartoonish enough not to werry my concience.

I have played all the GTA’s since before GTA III and I will say I have never been unsatisfied with the gaming experience I have recieved from any of them. Rockstar almost always strives to make a game as perfect as it can be. You can’t just judge one game that is not even out yet, by comparing it with completely different games. Your argument is invalid and ridiculous. It sounds more like whining if anything at all.
It is a sandbox game, and it is called that for a reason and that reason is exploration. GTA games have almost always been divided in sections and anybody who has played GTA will already know this and I can only recall a hand full of missions where it had you move all the way across the map. You as a gamer would know this already if you played all the GTA games.
Spawning at the hospital is no big deal sorry if it inconveniences you to unrealistically show up right outside where you were gunned down.

Wow I read this and wasted 5minutes of my life. Seriously are you like one of those 70 year olds who rate great movies a 1 out of 10 because you have no idea what any of the jokes meant? You are a €un+ go back to your wii and leave the real gaming to real gamers!
I think the author’s reasons for disliking GTA V (assuming all of the points are true even though unconfirmed) are unfounded. The first couple of reasons, more character customization and a larger map, virtually no one wants less. We want something more ambitious, and the ability to change your hairstyle, seriously? Why would that feature upset you? Why do you want to be limited? I’m hoping the rumors of GTA V being four or five times the map size of GTA IV are true. Even in that game, it didn’t take long to travel from one corner of the map to another, provided you were in a helicopter. Even in a car, it didn’t take more than a few minutes to travel to polar opposite ends of the map. Like someone else said taxis with trip skip and the ability to instantly retry a mission via phone are probably returning, so there is no concern that it will take too long to travel. We need a bigger, more ambitious environment. I won’t comment on everything, but lastly on graphics, it doesn’t have to be phenomenal. There is a noticeable improvement from IV, slight but nonetheless present.
But… you haven’t even played it! And, besides that, you put pathetic and nonesense reasons, like Niko not being the protagonist or appearing in a hospital when you die. What an asshole.
Honestly, I feel these reasons have no basis – especially considering that the only thing we know about much about GTA V is its location. This article seems more like a GTA IV complaint list. As the game continues, it will expand, of coarse, there are certain flaws on such games. a video game is NEVER perfect. On all GTA titles, there are flaws. I’m not saying I hate GTA, I’m just saying that each GTA game (and games beyond) will have flaws and be good or the worst game.
A blog is a blog, chumps. It’s obvious that he neither plays the very first Grand Theft Auto nor as a fan of Rockstar’s third person shooter games. I have been a fan of GTA since I played them on the PS1. I never get tired running people over and rampaging against the monks. When GTA III came out, it’s an evolution to open world gameplay. Leslie Benzies became a producer when he evolved the series into a most controversial video game masterpiece.
Robert Beames, we have not played the game and neither of us here have beta tested the game. If you’re going to think that Grand Theft Auto V will suck, contact Rockstar North from Scotland to have you beta test the game at their studios and rethink about what you said.

Why are people spending their time trying to guess how GTA V is going to turn out? why don’t you just wait until the game actually comes out, play it then decide whether you like it or not and keep it to yourself as your own personal opinion and let other people think what they like, the less people tell you about their own views the happier you’ll be and the less you think about the game the less time it will seem to get here.
PS – personally, I’m excited… as long as they keep the whole of the Sanandreas map.

I agree with you on some things, but mostly i don’t. A sandbox map can never ever be big enough..
I agree with some points but when you say ” And no doubt this and that will be on this game, and they’ll change this and make this better.” they are just opinions, and until the game is actually realeased, we can’t say for sure what will be the content of the game. As for the community going CoD on Grand Theft Auto with the idea they are in control and when they spit the dummy or when something in game is not to their liking they hate the game and call it crap, I agree that the community/ community’s for all games of all genrés are being taken down and ruled by kids and children not even old enough to play these type of games. I for one have liked the Grand Theft Auto series and can say Rockstar games are my favorite game developer, but I doubt Grand Theft Auto 5 will fail as bad as what your saying it will. But in the end time will tell and if you are one person that read through all this I thank you for doing so.

In some ways I agree with you, in other’s ways I don’t. Honestly I didn’t get a chance to play gta4 till 2010 2 years after its release, and to me the graphics and new mechanics felt fresh and if I were to think of a sequel to the gta series I’d say it would be a spit in the face for the consumer to have to pay for the next gen console just to get a new gta. I think rockstar owe’s that to its fans, but I also think that since rockstar has been working on this game for so long that they can’t really mess up even graphically this time round because they know what they are striving for. Look at Skyrim how big the world was and how good the graphics looked, the gameplay wasn’t great or the story but the amount of graphical achievment they had from such a big game was incredible even for xbox and ps3, but that wasn’t because of just graphics it was because of drawn out artwork that was then turned into graphics. Who know’s what Gta5 will be like but nobody can possibly know yet. One thing is for sure is that Gta 4 was a great game and its only limitation was that it came out at a time where people still weren’t ready for Gta to grow up. Planes in Gta4 would have been impossible because the world was simply too small for effective flying, the driving to me personally is the best Iv’e ever experienced in an open world game, and the dark gritty story mixed with the dark gritty city. What I disliked in Gta 4 was probably the checkpoint system, and cops being too bland.

I do agree with this guy on some things but I think that Rockstar is going to do the exact opposite of what your saying. Yes audience is very important but its never taken away from what they wanna do or come in the way of their artist views. Looking at a screenshot and saying the graphics is bad is so wrong. When watching a frame of the game you notice everything that’s bad and It looks unreal. Look at a crysis screenshot and It will look really really bad, Play it and its awesome.
1: Niko is my favorite character ever, of any game but that doesn’t mean the other 3 are going to be bad characters, Michael looks quite interesting to me and Trevor might be fun to play. I don’t know about Franklin. But I hated the San Andreas fanboys who said “omfg no gym!!!11 gTa Iv suckss so much!!11!” Going to the gym in SA was pressing square or X for 2 minutes three or four times to get resistence and muscle at max, and why do I want to have a fat character if that means I’m going to be slower??

8: You didn’t had to drive all the way to the mission point again in GTA IV and maybe they’ll put checkpoints in GTA V, and if they don’t that won’t make the game suck.
9: Watch the trailers and first videos of GTA IV and RDR and compare them with the last ones. Probably that’s beta version and it doesn’t look so bad

The handling of the vehicles wasn’t improved, in fact it was made WORSE. It’s neither realistic nor fun. How about having every goddamn car in the game have their gravity center 10 feet above the ground? Yeah, that’s pretty much what it is. I’m sorry, but you saying that the handling in GTA IV was better makes me wonder whether you’re saying it’s better because you think it’s more realistic or because you think it’s more fun. If you say that because you think it’s more realistic, than you have no idea how a real car controls. Cars don’t skid all over the place at 30 mph on concrete. It just doesn’t happen. Brakes are more efficient than this in real life, steering is more efficient than this in real life… Seriously even the GODDAMN HANDBRAKE sends you flying half a mile ahead. Can you imagine how dangerous that would be if it was the case in real life?
The cars in GTA IV have virtually no grip on the road whatsoever and that makes them a pain in the ass to handle, don’t let anybody tell you otherwise.

I agree with you in everything you have said. I for myself think that GTA SA was a good game, but that GTA IV was way, way better in terms of graphics, story and (important!) car handling. It really upsets me when some stupid kid comes to me and says “wee gta sa was better than gta iv because you could go to the gym!!!”. Hell yeah kid why dont you go to the gym in real life if it pleases you.

i was pissed off at gta 4 after san andreas, i loved the rpg elements that they left out in favor of better graphics and a more detailed city, the game will suck if they leave the rpg elements out.From what i have read and seen of gta 5 it will suck for me because of everything you talk about in your article will be left out. Firstly, Rockstar have said you can change your clothes but the RPG Elements are gone so an In depth character can still be made, The mobile phone will return but instead of getting the same “Hey cousin you want to go bowling” phone call every bloody 5 minutes, it will be used in different ways and the activities still return but not so frequent, the world itself is very detailed and a Michael Bay like thing, seriously? GTA 4 was a step back in more ways than it was a step forward, that’s why fans complained! GTA 4 looked good, the controls worked out much better and the general gameplay felt less of an arduous battle but it still had the “been here before” feeling and loads of extras missing.
It’s the small things that keep people busy. Working out, jumping off buildings, flying jets, customising cars, stealing and selling cars, gambling, riding a BMX.
GTA 5 will just be a culmination of the advancements in 4 with the larger sandbox feel from San Andreas, better looking characters fro LA and a touch of flower picking from RED
