This week saw the release of several teaser images from Rockstar’s upcoming release of GTA V revealing that yes, there will be vehicles and places in the game. Still, with no news on gameplay we have been left to dream of what may or may not be included in the finished GTA V package.
Even since GTA IV launched, the sandbox game scene has changed dramatically and each new game in the genre has bought new or re-imagined ideas to the table, each with their own successes and failures. We here at WhatCulture hope that Rockstar have been taking note of such releases and borrow these 10 top features for GTA V.
10. Vehicle Hijacking
Saints Row the Third
Considering the vast majority of your time spent in GTA involves driving, getting in and out of cars has never been particularly fast or elegant. Whether it was waltzing up to a car to get in, only to have Niko open the door and proceed to stand motionless beside it or being thrown clean into the air because the car you thought was stationary was still moving at .5 mph. Suffice to say it was all very awkward and very frustrating. Saints Row looked at the age old ‘press button to enter vehicle’ paradigm and thought; how can we make this better yet crazier. Their solution was a simple, when sprinting towards a vehicle, a quick tap of a button would cause you to launch into the air through the windshield and boom! Your away. Of course, at present this wouldn’t quite fit into the semi-realistic world that Rockstar is trying to create, however the idea itself is a sound one and the ability for an easy way to get moving quickly would be a welcome addition to the series.

Shouldn’t the example for No 9 be Yakuza, you know the franchise that heavily influenced Sleeping Dogs.
Good point, an oversight on my part! My bad!
I don’t really get everyone wanting GTA V to just be a revamped version of San Andreas, nor do I really see what incentive would make Rockstar want to do that. IV was one of the best reviewed games of all time, and took the franchise in a much more realistic and gritty direction, something I certainly applaud. I hope that Rockstar finds the right balance between realistic and crazy and doesn’t veer to far in either direction.
@Dave Chapman
Sorry to be a grammer Nazi but you said Vi in the page about driving in Saints Row instead of IV. :P But, its a great article, well done, keep up the good work. :D
Whoops can’t believe I missed that, still when GTA VI rolls around I guess it will make perfect sense! Thanks though :)
Let rock* do their thing. It has been four years since the last gta, four years that gta v has been in development. Im 100% sure that r* will deliver an awesome experience with gta v. Red Dead Redemption took six years to develop and became a phenomal
And Chinese Democracy was in developpement for 15 years and ended up being a disaster.
Julien, why are you comparing a political movement to a video game?
Totally lol. Earth took 5 billion years to develop life and it turned out great. Julien is stooopid.
Comparing R* to W. AXL Rose w/o GnR is senseless.
Referring to “Chinese Democracy” as a political movement vs. an ill fated from the get go music project is downright lulzy.
Nahh,i’m sure GTA V will not add one of feature from other sandbox games.Rockstar will make new features that any other sandbox game didn’t have.Wait n’ see
Hi Dave, what you said sounds great but not realistic because it would cause a lot of memory. Remember how Max Payne 3 got so big. It had great visuals, versatile and long plot, different shooting mechanisms, a bit of craziness, etc. Now, stretch that scenario all the way to the map of San Andreas, I am sure that we would be looking at a 70 gb game and that’s not economical for them, nor do i like that much amount of GB’s unless some company releases a DVD drive that can read and install the contents of a blu-ray in 10 minutes. :-;
I do like some of the points where it can be done within memory constraints like hiding in the crowd or pulling a distraction to escape, etc.
Destruction mode seems cool but can’t be done in a city because then we would be looking a destroyed San Andreas and it was fine in Red Faction because we were supposed to destroy each and every building.
As far as hand to hand combat goes, my take goes for Ballad of Gay Tony as well. The combat was improved and looked great.
As far as graphical details in character goes, Max Payne 3 would be my favorite because it clearly had the details I missed in previous games. It had all the subtle lines that LA Noire presented plus it had the sweat and panting effect that was missed in it.
Now, what do i want?
I’d like to see Cheetah in action because after seeing the Image at Rockstar Game’s site, I am hooked and waiting for a proper video of it. It kind of makes you wonder, why did we not see it in the first trailer when there were several cars? I think there will be more surprises with GTA V than we could imagine. Lets keep our fingers crossed, alright?
your right on some of this but saints row was funny but terrible i didnt touch it after i beat it rockstar needs to stick to realistic but add funny and add co op saints row 1 & 2 were the best to me hours of fun the third was plain terrible if they can make gtas free mode like gta sa online mod i wouldnt be able to stop playing the funny like how on gt sa the one girl u met in the country was crazy that was funny it had such a wide variety of city country and stuff but dont make it like saints row the third i wouldnt even touch the game !
10. Vehicle Hijacking
I have to say, I used that quick hijack in SRTT for every vehicle I entered, and I am still COMPLETELY against it for GTA V. Why? Because SRTT became a chore to play. The open world was bland and uninspired and I really did want simply to rush to the next mission to get it over with. Thank God for that quick hijack. I would never use that in a GTA game because I never feel the need to hurry.
9. Fists Of Fury
Yes! Although melee combat is not meant to be the main form of combat in GTA like it is in Sleeping Dogs, I certainly welcome this. It is really the only game mechanic in which Rockstar is not miles ahead of the competition.
8. Deadeye
No, I believe that fit perfectly in the world of RDR, but that is where it should remain.
7. The Art of Disguise
I welcome some stealth gameplay in GTA. It is one of my favorite genres of games. I’m just not sure how well this could be implemented into an open world like GTA’s.
6. So Little Time….
Now of course it’s ridiculous to compare GTA with an RPG like Skyrim, but I always welcome more to do. The problem is when it starts to feel like filler and get repetitive like Saints Row’s “activities”. I don’t want tacked-on minigames of lower quality just to pad out the length of the game. GTA IV was consistently high quality throughout the entire game. And I spent more time in Liberty City than any other open world, despite it having less random activities force-fed to the player.
5. The Devil’s In The Details
The last thing you could ever complain about for Rockstar’s games this gen is lack of detail. GTA IV is by miles the most detailed open world game ever released. One block of Liberty City has more intricate detail than many game’s entire worlds. Now if we’re particularly speaking about facial details like seen in L.A. Noire, that’s a different story. I thought GTA IV had fantastic facial animations compared to most other games. The character’s faces were expressive and believable, not stiff and gamey like you’ll see in most other titles. They won’t be using Motion Scan for GTA V, and I don’t believe it is worth the hassle.
4. You Have Reached Your Destination
Ugh… those big glowing green arrows floating in the environment. I cringed when I started playing Sleeping Dogs and noticed that they took these from Saints Row. These are not racing games. I could understand having these markers during a racing activity, but it completely kills the immersion during regular gameplay. I know it is not in Rockstar’s style to add something like that, so I’m not worried.
3. Destructible Environments
To have buildings completely destructible is not practical or even possible in an open world game like GTA. Destructible cover and environmental objects should return though.
2. Bringing Back The Crazy
GTA titles were NEVER as crazy as Just Cause or Saints Row, and they never should be. TBOGT’s events are as far as they should ever go in that direction. The events and characters need to at least be believable to tell a meaningful story.
1. CO-OP
Oh, co-op. How many games you have ruined for me. I sincerely hope they craft the story as a single player experience and leave any co-op as separate altogether. They could have a separate co-op story, and special co-op missions in multiplayer like GTA IV had, but DO NOT force co-op on the main game.
Excellent rational points u made Yoda. Personally, I disagree only with your view about # 3, but u def made excellent arguments about everything else. This foreignaid character below is clearly a hating fool with no taste or sense of what qualities a gangster sandbox game should possess
Your comment is incorrect and misleading. Sleeping Dogs was inspired (and originally supposed to be an installment of) the True Crime series (released 2 years before Yakuza), but became Sleeping Dogs after Activision decided to cancel what was known at the time as True Crime: Hong Kong. It is mostly based on Hong Kong action cinema, (more specifically Infernal Affairs) telling the story of an undercover cop trying to break down the triads from the inside. Yakuza, does not tell the tale of undercover police work, and it is folly of you to say one inspired the other just because they are set in the same continent (the largest and most populated). Do some research next time and get your facts right.
GTA IV is by far the best GTA to date. I loved and cherished San Andreas before IV came out. I used to play San Andreas two hours a day. Now GTA IV has taken that place. Anyone who is going to bash GTA IV for not being “crazy” enough needs to go play Saints Row. I applaud rockstar for keeping GTA IV as real as a crime simulator gets. I hope V is the same way.
the art of disguise – they sort of did this in gta vice city were you dressed up as cops for a mission
Rockstar is trying to make the GTA series too realistic now. Only acrobats can do that in real life. It would probably never happen.
The art of disguise – I really like this idea and think they should implement this into the new game, but should be subtle about it. Thinking of the AC series, they could use crowds, benches etc to blend into when escaping the cops on foot.
I think the dead-eye function could work very well in the game too. Just because people relate it to the wild west with RDR doesn’t mean it wont fit into the GTA series. Like you said, it just needs to be labelled with a new name.
Whatever R* produce to us next year, I’ve got all the confidence in the world they won’t let us down.
so basically the bloke who wrote this article wants another saints row game opposed to a new gta!
These are all horrible suggestions. Rockstar is the original and outsells these franchises. They don’t need to steal anything, especially the carjack one!
This game should be as realistic as GTA IV is to play, but as crazy and fun as GTA SA is.
Face it, the comedy of last gen’s GTA’s was what made it fun to play and would really be missed by true GTA fans..
Remember how much fun it was to rob a bank with that crazy chick on GTA SA, chasing guys on quad bikes and getting as high up into the air just to let CJ fall to his death(GTA IV’s beats SA’s hands down(Actually makes you feel like you’re falling)).
Hope GTA V has that true to the game snoop doggy OG feel to it like GTA SA.
What would be an awesome storyline was if they made it start out as a little kid leaving the hood with all it’s gangsters and stuff to Liberty City and then returning to a truly different Los Santos.
Personally, I enjoy the realistic feel of GTA IV. Makes it seem more real to life. Judging by Red Dead and L.A. Noire it will have these same realistic elements to them, also judging by the trailer, which seems to be the same engine. Now I’m not going to sit here and say GTA 4.5, like some illogical people did with Modern Warfare 3. Nothing has ever been wrong with using the same engine, especially when the engine is perfectly fine. It’s more of a hassle to make a brand new engine and sort out the issues. The new CoD engine will come with next-gen. Other than that, GTA V will be Game of The Year I’m quite sure. They are taking their time with it, and Rockstar has yet to disappoint me, especially with any Gran Theft Auto title. Idk what it was about San Andreas but I was so addicted to that game. I used to fire it up and just fly around in the Hydra. I’m not concerned about the game’s release, even if it comes Q4 2013, because it seems the more time devs take the better it is. I can’t wait to play it though, that’s for sure.
From Sleeping dogs would be sticking people in the trunk of your car. That created some mega Lolz. Especially when I worked out the cops will chase you still even when you have stuck one of there buddy offices in the boot of there own car…
