For those of you living under a rock from the gaming world, Grand Theft Auto V is due to have a proper revealing any week now. With only a rather flashy teaser trailer, we are left with endless questions about the next installment of RockStar’s monster gaming franchise Grand Theft Auto.
In previous installments we’ve played as many different breeds of characters. We’ve played as seemingly innocent, yet trigger happy, protagonists to emotionally driven men in pursuit of a better life. Grand theft Auto V’s reveal trailer has fans thinking of many possible protagonists. Old characters making a return, introducing a new character (as GTA has traditionally done with each installment), or even multiple playable characters throughout the game.
Let’s start with the reveal trailer. The only plausible evidence we have, as of now. “I wanted to retire from what I was doing, you know? That- that line of work. Be a good guy for once.” Assuming the character narrating is our protagonist (which is likely), we know he’s a bad guy. At least he was. He left wherever it is he came from in an attempt to escape a corrupt life. However he falls back into old habits. “But, well, you know how it is.”
One popular rumor is the man we hear speaking is Tommy Vercetti, our protagonist in Grand Theft Auto: Vice City. In the 1970′s Tommy survives an ambush, but is convicted for eleven counts of murder. Due to lack of evidence, Tommy is sentenced to fifteen years in prison. After he’s released, Tommy reportedly has a friend, Ken, sent to a rehab facility in San Andreas, where we now know Grand Theft Auto V takes place. Assuming this game is set in 2012, Vercetti would be 61 years of age. It is possible Tommy decided to move to San Andreas, where his friend Ken went. 61 is a retirement kind of age. However, Grand Theft Auto games are traditionally full of gun play and fence jumping. Could a man in his 60′s pull off such stunts? We do know the man narrating wants to retire and the man shown (pictured below) does look rather old. He also slightly resembles Vercetti.
Claude, the mute protagonist from Grand Theft Auto III, is also another rumored character. However there is little evidence to back this up, other then the small resemblance of the man in the trailer. The protagonist could also be a new character with a deep back story. In the trailer we see many different men driving vehicles and running away from the police. The “multiple protagonists” rumor could also be another possibility. RockStar plans on revealing more about Grand Theft Auto V soon. Until then, this is all speculation.
