Kinect Costs Almost As Much To Make As The Xbox One

xbox-one-kinect-600x300 Over the weekend an Xbox One developer decided to host an ask me anything (AMA) session on Reddit, leading to him/her revealing the titular bombshell. Although the AMA was done anonymously, moderators at Reddit were given enough information to confirm the individual€™s position, ensuring he/she wasn€™t just some random out to fulfil their own motive. When asked about the Xbox One€™s Kinect, a device that comes with the console and must be connected for the game system to work (effectively turning the incredibly unpopular feature into a compulsory item, the developer said: €œThe majority of the masses care only about the console, {but} the success of the Kinect carries much more weight to us. The sensor costs almost as much as the console to make.€ The acknowledgment that most gamers have no interest in the Kinect is a concerning matter, as it indicates the rumours that Microsoft care more about their shareholders than their customers are true. On the other hand, it could be more down to Microsoft attempting to appease game developers, with the anonymous writer continuing to say: €œThe goal with having a Kinect ship with every Xbox is to guarantee to game developers, if they implement Kinect features into their games, everyone who has an Xbox will be able to experience it.€ Whether this is the case is hard to say, but Microsoft doesn€™t have a history of caring about anyone else other than themselves (as shown by their neglect of indie games. The company€™s DRM reversal was also commented on, with the developer showing clear signs of regret over the decision. €œI thought we didn't push on its benefits enough.€ They wrote, €œThe petition shows there are lots of people who want these benefits as much as I do and clearly our execs care or Marc Whitten wouldn't have referred to it in his IGN interview.€ It is strange anyone would defend the DRM policy when its negatives outweighed the positives to such a vast extent, but as a developer the individual would have likely benefitted from the dystopian control it would have provided over the consumers, so perhaps that€™s what they meant by €˜benefits€™. The main concern though is that the hefty $500 price tag for the console could have been half that if not for the attrition of a device less than 10% of the market wanted, as it could deter some of the few people willing to buy the console back onto the competition. What do you think about this revelation? Has it changed the likelihood of you buying the console at all? Share in the comments below.
