Mass Effect is the nearest thing gaming has to a franchise on the level of Star Wars or Star Trek, and if it wasn't for a shaky third instalment that just couldn't stick an immensely hyped-up landing, chances are we'd be talking about it with just as much reverence as Lucas' or Roddenberry's now-legendary mythos. Still, fans of what Bioware created have stuck by it over the years, getting over that last hurdle with a mix of wonderment for what future sequels could hold, theories on what's already gone down and best of all - reminiscing over just how incredibly well put together the series is as a whole. It's easy to forget - when you're introducing endless swathes of alien goons to the business-end of your specced up assault rifle - that a huge chunk of Mass Effect's appeal is in its characters.
