Pokémon: Ranking The Starters Of All 6 Generations From Worst To Best

Bad news, Charmander.

Starter Pokemon
The Pokemon Company

One of the greatest measures of each new generation in the Pokémon franchise is how appealing the three starters are. Since these are most often the first new Pokédex entries that we get to see, these are usually the first indication as to how exciting the whole new set of monsters will be.

With Pokémon Sun & Moon due to arrive in November this year, we've already been given a good look at the three new battlers we'll be offered when our adventure in the Alola region finally begins. Having seen them in action across a couple of trailers, we can be confident that at least two of the new starters look pretty darn awesome. Sorry, Popplio fans...

But, before we get a chance to make our next big choice and decide which Alola starter we'll begin our journey with, it's time to take a look back at the partner Pokémon we've been offered in that past six generations. Many disparaging remarks have been made about the way starter Pokémon have decreased in quality since generation one, but is that really true?

Considering their battle abilities, evolutionary line and even how well-designed they are, here are the starter Pokémon from generations one to six ranked from worst to best. Be warned; fan popularity alone will not be enough for a spot at the head of the list!
