Just about every November you'll see fans, critics and Twitter eggs alike hailing the "death" of Call of Duty. But for as much as everyone rags on the series' stagnating multiplayer every year without fail, the single-player campaigns have continued to impress.

Because even in the most derided entries in the franchise, the single-player components always hit some major blockbuster highs, coming with memorable set-pieces that the series has slowly perfected over the past decade. It's always truly impressive how consistent these campaigns have managed to be, especially considering that three different developers reside over the franchise these days.

Furthermore, while the core CoD gameplay has always been solid, the actual narratives themselves have remained similarly enjoyable. Even in their silliest moments, the campaigns have provided enough Hollywood thrills and pulpy twists to warrant a playthrough, which is why it's such a shame that millions of players only ever pay attention to the lauded multiplayer side of the franchise.

These are some of the most enjoyable first-person shooter campaigns that you can find, and they deserve to be recognised alongside the series' more popular online modes.

However, which CoD told its story best?
